9/30/41 GD sent an outline of treatments from readings for
[
2153] to date to elucidate handling of her case by Devereaux
School and Dr. C. Haddon D.O.:
CASTOR OIL PACKS
Two successive evenings out of each week (say Thursdays
and Fridays) apply the hot Castor Oil Packs - according
to enclosed directions - over the lower portion of the
liver, the lacteal duct center, and extending to the
caecum area. Use at least three thicknesses of flannel
that is soaked or saturated in Castor Oil. Apply this as
warm as may be handled comfortably, though not too hot.
Then cover it with cloths, and an electric pad put over
same. Let this remain on for at least an hour each time.
After the Pack has been removed, sponge off the area with
a little soda water; then massage the body thoroughly with
Pure Peanut Oil. Massage just what the body will absorb
along the spine, extending from the base of the brain to
the end of the spine. Begin at the base of the brain (with
the body lying prone upon the face), and massage in a
circular motion on either side of the spine; every few
inches dipping the fingers in the Peanut Oil and massaging
the body. Then let the body turn over, and massage the
abdomen with the Peanut Oil, - not too much, but sufficient
that there may be some absorption, and the breaking up of
the lesions in this area.
On the second evening, following the Castor Oil Pack and the
Peanut Oil massage, give the body internally one
tablespoonful of Pure Olive Oil.
OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENTS
The next day, after the second evening of the Packs, you
see - say on Saturdays - we would have the general relaxing
treatment and osteopathic adjustments along the whole of
the cerebrospinal area, from the lower portion of the
spine upward, making the adjustments. This, to be sure,
is somewhat at variance to the ordinary manner of making
adjustments. Use knuckle or finger upon either side of
the spine and touch each segment in the adjusting.
It should be noted by the masseur or osteopath that the
lesions which cause attacks are in the lacteal duct and
those areas about the assimilating system and the upper
portion of jejunum and caecum. There are NO brain lesions,
but there is that which at times hinders the coordination
between the impulses of the body and the normal physical
reactions - or that break between the cerebrospinal and
the sympathetic or vegetative nerve system, that coordinates
from the lacteal duct through the adrenals and their reaction
to the pineal; causing the spasmodic reaction in the medulla
oblongata, or that balance at the base of the brain.
There are, to be sure, lacteal ducts. There are the strings
or ducts all through the upper portion of the alimentary
canal, or jejunum; but the larger patch or area is that
lying just below the lower end of the jejunum, and where
same EMPTIES into the jejunum. THIS patch is not an INTERNAL
activity but an EXTERNAL, that makes for the production
of assimilation. The adhesions in these ducts here were
produced by an excess temperature, which the body suffered
at some period when there was too SUDDEN dropping of the
temperature, and NOT sufficient water, or manipulations,
or activity, through the alimentary canal. This has
gradually caused the disturbances to the general breaking
of coordination in the nerve systems, and brings about -
for this body - the SOURCE of the attacks. These CAN be -
these will be eliminated, if these applications here
suggested will be followed.
The osteopathic manipulations, of course, are to adjust
those coordinations through lumbar, sacral, lower dorsals,
AND at the vegetative center - or the brachial center.
These are the areas for activity. The idea of the
treatments, of course, is to correct those subluxations, or
tendencies, which exist; deep in some areas, superficial
in others, along that area given; but mostly to eradicate -
causing the system to assimilate - the tautness, coldness
and the lesions in the right side of the body, in the areas
indicated. Not that such an adjustment or corrective
treatment would be done at each treatment, but WHEN such is
done - that is how long the treatment should be, you see.
Break up the lesions in the area; as well as making
adjustments from the 9th dorsal downward; coordinating those
upward - or above same - with those made in the lower area.
Also it is indicated that special adjustments are needed
of specific natures and characters to regulate those
activities of the eliminating system as related to the
Periods, or the genital activities of the bodily forces
themselves.
Treat more with the body lying upon its face, with the hands
above the head, - the area in the dorsals, from the 4th to
the 9th; first one side, then the other, of the cerebrospinal
system. Not so much adjustments in this area as stimulating
the activities of the body itself.
Then, with the body upon the left side, with the limb drawn
high up, treat the 7th and 8th dorsal upon the LEFT side,
with the left hand of the operator keeping in touch with
those reactions in the right area about the lacteal duct -
or that below the rib and to that area of the gall duct
center. This will indicate to the operator the taut areas
that are to gradually be broken up.
Now: After this adjustment or relaxing, - with the body
upon the back, the feet drawn up, - gently knead that area
about the liver, the gall duct, and extending even to the
caecum; gradually breaking up this tension that has been
seen or felt in this area by the movements from the left
side of the body.
After THIS application, then have the body on the RIGHT
side, with the right limb drawn high, hands above the head
- on both sides, to be sure - and treat those areas from the
lumbar to the 7th dorsal, especially on the right and left
areas of the cerebrospinal system, for the activity of the
coordinating of the genital system to the activity created
in the lacteal duct AND caecum area.
These are the manners of conditions existent, as we find,
and the modes for the helpful applications according to the
present needs.
LENGTH OF SERIES
Keep the above treatments consistently for five to six weeks,
- that is, the Packs, the Oil Massage and the Osteopathic
treatments, then leave these off for two to three weeks;
then repeat, and so on.
DIET - THROUGHOUT THE PERIOD.
Have plenty of the vitamins, especially of foods that carry
B, B-1, A, C and D. Such would be included, of course, in
plenty of citrus fruits, plenty of raw vegetables, - as
carrots, spinach, celery, lettuce; these raw, you see, and
grated very fine, or the juice extracted from same, - not
large quantities taken (of the juices) but a little bit each
day.
Keep away from sweets. No pastries or the like. Most of
the sweets, if any form is taken, should be in the fruits
- that is, the natural fruit sweets - or honey with the
honeycomb, but not great quantities. Preferably have
vegetables and vegetable juices as the principal portion
of the diet. Or, this would be as an outline, though not
ALL the foods that would be taken, to be sure:
Mornings - a dry cereal with some milk but very little
sweetening, or a re-enforced cooked cereal - as the whole
wheat or cracked wheat or steel cut oats. Or, instead there
may be taken citrus fruit juices - as orange juice with lemon
in it, or grapefruit, or pineapple juice; but never the
citrus fruit and the cereal at the same meal. Alternate
these; having one at one morning, the other the next, or
the like. But with either of these there may be taken
whole wheat toast, the yolk of an egg - whether boiled
or scrambled. This should be sufficient, with a little
milk; and preferably use the soy bean milk or the prepared
milks, rather than cow's milk.
Noons - let the principal portion consist of lettuce, celery,
tomatoes (these in moderation), with some fruit juices or
vegetable juices, or soup. Or let the raw vegetable salad
be taken at this meal, using the spinach, carrots, etc.,
with an oil or mayonnaise dressing to suit the taste.
Evenings - a little fowl or fish, or lamb (not fried),
with mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and all well-cooked
vegetables. Beef is not so good, unless VERY well cooked
and well masticated. No fat meats. All sea foods are well
for the body.
These we find in general would be the best diet for the body.
No fried foods.
No carbonated waters.
Pumpernickel, or the brown bread, or the like, would be
preferable. No white bread, white rolls or the like.
Cheese, that is not too much of the cheddar nature, may be
taken in moderation.
SEDATIVES
Keep the Phenobarbital while it is effective, to allay
the spasmodic reactions which occur in the body from those
incoordinations. Do not overgive these, but they are helpful
to the body; aiding in bringing the better conditions; until
better conditions have been produced between the physical,
the mental AND the spiritual forces.
There may be other drugs used from time to time, or changes
from these, but keep away from sedatives as much as possible.
Keep the Phenobarbital - one grain thrice daily - as long as
it is effective; but because the attacks are allayed, do not
leave off the other applications for removing the physical
obstructions produced in the body.
Do not depend too much upon sedatives, for these destroy the
will.
LAXATIVES
Keep the eliminations good. For this we would alternate
between those of a mineral and of a vegetable nature - as
the other stimulations are given through the Packs and
Massages. If desired, INNER CLEAN here would be very well.
Also that which supplies weight would be well, as the
Psyllium or the like. At times there should be used the
oils, or Petrolagar - but this always of the Alkalin rather
than the Acid nature.
AMUSEMENT - ENTERTAINMENT
Anything that is outside or in the open. Any form of
activity is good for the body, if it is able to be kept
in the open.
As to movies, crowds, radio, public places, etc., this
depends upon the temperament. There are times when such
are needed for the body temperament. Do not force these
upon the body, but let them be the natural consequences
of those things sought for the entertainment, as well as
the general association that is brought to the environs,
or to be the environs of the body at such times.
There should be as much exercise in the open each day as
practical, not to be overstrenuous. Calisthenics, or
ANYTHING that has to do with the general movements of the
body in the open. Walking is one of the BEST of exercises;
walking, swimming, ANYTHING that has the calisthenics;
tennis, handball, badminton; ANY of those activities for
the body.
WORK
Anything that has to do with the general build up of the
maternal instincts.
Cultivate the tendencies to be helpful to others.
Do these, consistently, prayerfully; never doubting;
knowing that all healing comes from God; that all material
applications made are merely to make the attunement so that
the divine within may accomplish the healing.

2153] is quite happy at school.
She seems quite thrilled with the companionship of children
her own age. Of course, we miss her very much, but so long
as she is happy, that is all that matters."
