7/05/41 [
2444]'s letter to EC:
New York, New York
Dear Mr. Cayce,
I've been working on the advice in your reading lately. You
know I always did want to study children but I didn't see how
it would be possible for me to get a job in such an
overcrowded field. Since I received your timely reading,
I've been looking into the teen age children as you
suggested. I find that at present there is quite a demand
for psychology in western towns run by City Managers. The
City Managers chose people, who are specialists in a certain
field, to take care of that field. I would probably be able
to be the head of the division of adolescents.
I applied to Barnard but I won't know whether or not I've
been accepted until the end of this month. I find that of
all the colleges I've looked at Barnard is the only one that
gives a course in adolescent psychology so even if I don't
get into Barnard this year I'll have to transfer next year.
I want to thank you very much for the aid which you've given
me at this critical time of my life. I hope to be able to
discuss this reading more fully with you if I am at Virginia
Beach this fall before I start college.
Thank you again for your very kind advice.
Sincerely yours, [
2444]
I hope this finds you and your dear ones well. How do you
like my typing? Love to one and all,
Fondly, [
2444]
8/03/41 Mother [
459]'s letter: "[
2444] did not get in
Barnard. They have a quota and favored out of town people, I
understand. She had pretty good averages - [English-French
honors] 100 in Regent math. - fine student in Chemistry."
9/11/41 See mother's reading
459-13, Par. 16-A--20-A
indicating she should attend the University of Cincinnati
where her brother [
1856] was studying to be a Rabbi [at
Hebrew Union College] so that the family could be kept
together.
1/02/42 Mother [
459]'s letter: "[
2444] was cited best on
publications staff of UC for Freshmen - 11,500 students and a
goodly number for Freshman Class. She was called in for
consultation about postgraduate work. The group advisor
feels that she will attain great heights in field of
Education and advises that she line up her studies
accordingly. Psychology is definitely her field and Social
Research. She says Barnard better than UC for latter one -
just as the reading said. The Dean told her UC was not
outstanding in Psychology - a marvelous Psychology Staff...
The children [[2444 and [
1856]] are working hard to prove
their worth."
5/13/42 Mother [
459]'s letter: "[
2444] did VERY well - the
only Freshman allowed Sociology, Zoology and Psychology in
her Freshman year. She was youngest Freshi at UC. Now she
is 17."
5/21/42 Mother [
459]'s letter: "[
1856] has never looked at a
girl. [
2444] worries over him as she steps out quite a bit.
Gave a party in Cinn. and ended up with 65 on the male side
mostly. If you have the reading at hand [2444-1] - the
Catholic boy made his appearance and proposal followed. She
said just because his mother and her mother decided for them
that assimilation was not to be indulged in was no good
reason. How's that? Now I see the why, when you said [in my
reading] a home for the children. [
2444]'s matrimonial
affairs certainly kept me stepping. She had so many
invitation[s] for formals, night clubs, etc., all for frat
dances - sent three bids bids for each thought she would have
ended up with her name on the 'social' register instead of
'Soph' for next year. As it was she had a sprinkle of both.
She took Zoology and Sociology with a bunch of pre-meds and
really one didn't know there was a war with the way she was
swarmed with the opposite sex. She was designated to go to
Columbia as a representative in her class in Sociology after
they had told her in the beginning that she would be allowed
to take the course in her Freshman year as it had never been
granted before - on 'probation'. She had a most interesting
winter."
5/22/42 See mother's reading
459-14 which advises her to keep
[
2444] with her for the summer, or in whatever activity she
undertakes.
4/19/44 Mother [
459]'s letter: "Dr. [...] is one of [
2444]'s
professors... [
2444] is surrounded with all the boy friends.
Dr. and Mrs. [...] are true Christians... Well, [
2444] is
making UC in 3 years. Took her summers at Columbia as the
reading said...Barnard is Columbia in the summer. Well,
she's a big person on Campus. Earned 3 keys so far."
7/44 Mother [
459] wrote about [
2444]'s various proposals of
marriage and her narrow escape from elopement, but she had
decided all on her own that she wanted to return to school
and work for her Ph.D. in Psychology.
"I just called Child Guidance and they are giving her a
position for the summer - she will be giving I.Q. tests to
children from pre-school through teen age or adolescence.
The rdg. said to deal with children that age."
2/49 Xmas card from her mother indicated that [
2444] had
married a young Lt. in the Navy while she was at Cornell
University.
7/14/65 Uncle [
257] stated that [
2444] had "married well" -
that her husband is an ornithologist - they have 3 girls and
a boy.
