5/30/41 Letter from [
2514] to EC: "...In April of 1938 I
went to Vanderbilt Hospital to see if the doctors there could
help me. They told me I had focal scleroderma and could do
nothing to help me. Since then I have gradually grown worse.
I am twenty-two years of age and have a little boy two and a
half.
"After seeing and talking to Miss [
528] last Sunday, I have
renewed hope and wonder if you might help me too.
"My skin is not hard and swollen like Miss [
528]'s, but white
spots have come over my body especially on my arms and legs.
The muscles behind my knees have contracted until it hinders
my walking. Since October I have had about a dozen sores
on my feet and legs which have been very painful. My Doctor
said they are caused from lack of blood supply.
"I just have to get well as I have so much to live for.
I just can't afford to get down, so if you can help me
I believe I'll be the happiest person on earth.
"I don't exactly understand your method of treatment
and would like to hear from you at once..." [GD's note:
Mrs. [
2514] enclosed the following copy of doctor's report
on her background to her local physician, dated
5/31/38.]
Doctor's report to local physician: Dr. Ross [Ted
Ross, M.D.], ..., Tennessee.
My dear Doctor Ross:
"I wish to make the following report of Mrs. [
2514], who
was admitted to the hospital here on April 26, 1938.
"On admission Mrs. [
2514] had characteristic picture of focal
scleroderma involving particularly the arms, forearms and
left palm.
"Because there has been a definite association of disturbed
parathyroid function in many cases of calcification of
the skin and because one certainly sees calcification in
scleroderma, it was out [our] opinion that careful studies
of calcium balance should be undertaken in this case.
Accordingly calcium balance was determined and it was
found to be normal.
"In the light of this fact, I could see no hope of
improvement following surgical removal of her parathyroid
glands and although the disease, as you well know, is at
times self limiting in this form, it has a definite tendency
to recurrence at times with definite acceleration in its
spread. In the light of our present knowledge, therefore,
we can offer this girl nothing more than palliative
treatment.
Should there be any further development in this field, I will
make it a point to communicate its findings to you."
Yours very truly, [signed] Ralph, M. Larson, M.D.
REPORTS
7/11/41 Letter from [
2514] to EC: "...Yesterday afternoon
Mother and I drove over to see Mrs. [
760]. We took
Mrs. [
2526]. We had such a nice visit there, and she told
us so many interesting things about you and your work. After
hearing these wonderful things I haven't the least doubt in
the world about getting well. Then I showed Mrs. [
760] these
scars on my arms she just lightly said, 'Oh they'll all go
away.' That made me so very happy.
"I start my Appliance next Thursday. I can hardly wait!...
"I believe I feel better. Maybe it's my imagination!
Everyone tells me I look a lot better, so guess I feel
better too. One thing I'm getting more rest and am freer
from worry. That has helped lots. [...], my husband, who
massages me every night says my skin has improved lots in
texture and color. My knees are still stiff and my feet
still hurt, but I'm sure as time goes on that will clear up.
When these sores get well then we can massage so much
better. I'm in hopes no more will develop and these will
heal up soon...
"I'm so thankful that God has shown me the way to you, and
shown you the way to help me. May His blessings be upon
you..."
7/19/41 Letter from [
2514] to EC: "...I took my first
Appliance treatment today. We are so afraid we won't work
the machine correctly but with all of us working on it I
believe we got it right today."
8/22/41 Letter from [
2514] to EC: "...I'm writing you about
my check reading. I can hardly wait to hear from you to
see how I'm improving or progressing. One week from today,
August 29th, I will complete my treatment suggested in my
first reading. I feel sure I have improved some, and am
so anxious to start on the next treatments..."
