4/15/42 Letter from EC to [
2514]: "Thank you for yours of
the 7th - am happy for you that you are feeling better, all
praise to HIM, the giver of all good and perfect gifts.
"Think melting the Lanolin and then mixing with the peanut
oil is alright, it is meant particularly for the knees, but
can be and would be well to use on all parts of the body
where the skin has been affected, if it doesn't make it too
expensive. Yes, use the Olive and peanut oil if you do not
use the Lanolin and Peanut Oil, but not necessary to use
both, don't think.
"Think if you will write to Mr. Marsden Godfrey, 2709
LaFayette Blvd., Norfolk, Va., he can supply you with the
correct size wire for your appliance. Might be well to have
him send you two new wires, you can use your same connections
on the new wires, best these be kept working properly.
"Do hope Mrs. [
2526] can get her treatments, if she doesn't
am afraid she will get in a bad fix.
"If the Lanolin is used in the morning, leave on when you
take the Oil pack; this should drive it in - lanolin is the
nearest oil to the natural oil of the human skin they know
of.
"Calcios - just what will be spread on a whole wheat wafer
like butter, don't think quite a half teaspoon full.
"Am glad all are so helped about your improvement - all
Praise to HIM. Know you are happy about it - you must
come to the Beach this summer for the Congress..."

Electricity Medical Aid
Helps People Who Turn Partly Into Stone
By HOWARD W. BLAKESLEE
St. Paul - (AP) - People who turn partly into stone are
finding relief and sometimes cure in an electrical treatment
called iontophoresis.
The method was described to the American College of
Physicians by Dr. Irving S. Wright, New York City. The
disease is scleroderma. It is due to calcium which turns the
skin to a smooth hard ivory colored armor. Affected parts
become as rigid as statues.
Iontophoresis is a combined electrical and drug treatment
in which the electricity drives the medicines in the form
of tons or atoms into the skin, even after it has become
ivory-hard. The stony area is covered with asbestos paper
soaked in mecholyl, a synthetic drug. When the current
is turned on the electric current is felt as a tingling
sensation.
Mecholyl closely resembles one of the body's natural
chemicals which the nerves use in their job of controlling
living tissues. One of these jobs is dilation and
contracting of the small blood vessels.
The electrically driven synthetic drug causes dilation in
these vessels in the region of the skin. More blood flows
there and the resulting softening of the stone is attributed
to absorption of the calcium by the increased flow.
Not all cases respond, but Dr. Wright told of a woman
whose hands had turned into almost rigid stony claws until
she was helpless. She recovered so completely that she
resumed housework, including washing and ironing.
5/17/42 Letter: "Not being able to get about is
most discouraging. I tell Mrs. [
2526] she should be
thankful because she can walk and get out to see things.
"I hope you will find my condition improved, and that I'll
get a very encouraging reading. May God be with you.
"I'm enclosing two air mail stamps. Please send my Rdg. by
air mail. I'm very anxious to start next treatments."
1. My skin is softening real fast but my knees are still the
same. Why won't they heal?
2. I haven't menstruated since March 5th. Why is this? Is
this to be expected? Should anything be done about it?
3. Why am I so nervous? Is this to be expected? (Something
must be done. In the past few weeks I've gradually become
worse. Sometimes I feel like I'm losing my mind. When I
get nervous my knees ache so badly.)
4. Why can't I sleep at night? (Sometimes even if I'm not
nervous or hurting I just can't sleep. I'll just lie awake
until about 4 or 5 o'clock, then finally drop off to sleep.
I won't sleep in the day time hoping to sleep at night, but
still I'm just not sleepy. Why is this?)
5. Will my knees ever straighten out? Is there anything I
can do to help this?

CASTOR OIL
Many a war and peacetime industry is having clearer sailing
because we've finally been able to import enough castor beans
to build up our scant stocks of castor oil. AMONG OTHER
THINGS, IT MEANS MORE AND BETTER HAIR TONICS, LIPSTICKS
THAT ACT LIKE THOSE WE GOT BEFORE THE WAR.
