7/29/42 Letter to EC: "Mother wrote you Saturday, I believe
for a ck. rdg. I'm very anxious to get it and find out how
I'm progressing.
"Several changes have taken place in the past two months.
Many have been encouraging, and a few have been discouraging.
My skin has softened so much in so many places that we are
thrilled to death. Seemingly the white places are gradually
becoming duller. Behind my knees has almost stopped
draining. However, they seem to have reached another stage
and have now stopped improving. Some one suggested that we
bathe them with Epsom Salts water. Would this be wise?
I'm very anxious to get these places well so we can massage
behind my knees thus causing them to limber up. As they are
now, they are so sore they can't possibly be rubbed.
"Well, I'm still having these awful sores. Since my last
rdg. I've had two of the largest ones I've had yet. The
largest one is on the side of my left hip. I have certainly
suffered with my sides. On each side of my upper legs
the skin has been peeling off and is tender as can be.
I just can't sleep at night for the throbbing pains. In
the afternoon while taking my packs I can hardly stand it
at times. I hope these places will soon get better for a
good nights' sleep certainly will be wonderful.
"I've had another place to come on my head beside the other
one. Is there anything I can do about these? They run, then
dry up but then they come back. They are just on the surface
but I'm afraid they might become sores or something bad.
"I still haven't had a monthly period since March. You said
not to worry but I just can't help worrying a little for I
can't understand it. I believe I'd feel better if I could
get regulated. Lately I have ha trouble with my stomach.
It isn't a stomach ache but from my waist down just gets
sore. When this happens my sides and back aches also.
What causes this and can anything be done for it?
"Did Mr. Godfrey write you about my machine? I practically
have a new appliance. He sent new tops, poles, plates,
wires, etc. I had a new top made for the big jar. I'm
expecting to see some great changes now. Why did he send
such a large nickel and such a small copper plate? He sent
me some plain tops to put on the bottles when not in use and
sent separate wires for gold, camphor, and Atomidine. Then
he told me to connect it direct from appliance to the body.
Is this the way you would have me do it?
"I do so wish I could have been at the Congress. I'm sure
you all had a wonderful meeting. I'm planning on being there
next year.
"I hope my reading will be encouraging. May God be with you.
All things are done through Him. I pray that He will make
me whole again."
Gratefully, [

A warm glass of milk before bed [See 2514-7, Par. 17-A.]
Two Baltimore researchers have shown that L-tryptophane, one
of the most widely occurring of the essential amino acids,
may help sleeplessness without risk of addiction. According
to Newsweek for October 13, 1975, Dr. Clinton Brown of
Johns Hopkins and Dr. Althea M. I. Wagman of the Maryland
Psychiatric Research Center tested the naturally-occurring
substance on twelve women who frequently had difficulty
falling asleep. The women reported to the Center in
Catonsville for two weeks, and their sleep patterns were
monitored electronically. Before retiring, they were given
either tablets containing up to 3 grams of L-tryptophane,
or an inert placebo.
The study indicated that those who took the largest dose of
the amino acid went to sleep in only about half their normal
times, and slept about 45 minutes longer. Brown and Wagman
are cautious about extrapolating the results of such a small
study, and warn that their research to date has not included
hard-core insomniacs; but the outlook seems hopeful. Nor do
they know how L-tryptophane works. Biochemical studies of
the twelve women indicate the amino acid may increase the
production of serotonin, a chemical of the brain which
has been linked with sleep. Being a natural nutrient,
L-tryptophane is metabolized by the body, and cannot
produce coma or death if taken in large doses, unlike
barbiturates and other sedatives. Occurring in large
amounts in dairy products, L-tryptophane may just be the
reason behind that trusty old cure for sleeplessness, a warm
glass of milk before bed.
