Mr. Edgar Cayce,

Virginia Beach, Va.
My dear Mr. Cayce:
Since returning to my duties as superintendent of the ...
Products Company at Asheville, N.C., I felt it my duty to
write and thank you for the very courteous treatment that I
received at you institution to which I owe my life.
It might be interesting for me to review just what happened
to me. We work nearly one thousand men and owing to the
stress of my duties, I was in a very rundown condition. I
became very ill which led to unconsciousness for several
days. My associates obtained the best doctors possible in
the South under the direction of Dr. Bernard Smith [B. R.
Smith, M.D. Same doctor who treated Mrs. [
5564]] of
Asheville who is reputed one of our leading men.
Some of the doctors felt I had a strange fever. A very
prominent Atlanta doctor took an X-ray which showed a clear
case of advanced tuberculosis. My family wired you for a
reading. The diagnosis came back that I had bacilli in the
blood stream. Upon further examination it proved to be
streptococci. The doctors had given me a transfusion of one
quart of blood which the reading said would save my life
provided certain other medicines were taken and certain
treatment followed out.
The doctors had given me up to die but one week later when
Dr. Paullin from Atlanta arrived again for the second
examination, upon examining the plates of the X-ray, he
agreed with Dr. Murphy, the X-ray physician, that it was a
mild case of bronchitis, if the plates were to be believed.
Three weeks later I was taken on a cot to your hospital where
daily readings were given until I was strong enough to sit on
the sand at Virginia Beach.
Later I was permitted to go in the water and five weeks from
the day I arrived at the Beach, I was permitted to return to
New York to report to the president of our firm for duty.
I have never felt better in my life than I have felt in the
past eight months and I agree with Dr. Smith who in a letter
to me stated that I was out of the hands of the doctor and in
the hands of God, and you no doubt have been the means for
the information to come from God Himself to save my life and
to you again I say I owe my thanks. I certainly enjoyed the
personal attention received from you, your doctors and nurses
at the institution and if at any time I can be of service to
you or yours, you have but to command.
I am, with kindest personal regards,
Very sincerely, [

Mr. [

Asheville, N.C.
My dear Mr. [
2597]
May I just say a little word of appreciation for your
beautiful letter of the 10th?
I came home from New York, where I last saw you, to find my
father quite ill with pneumonia. You know just about what a
hard struggle we had with him, at his age and his physical
condition - for he has suffered for many years with asthma
and bronchial trouble, but he seems to be getting along
nicely, and I'm hoping will soon be feeling a lot better.
I haven't been able to do very much recently, for I've been
trying to do my best in taking care of him.
Again I want to say thank you for your letter, and I want to
assure you that each and every one of us appreciate you, not
for what you may have said or for what you may have done -
for us personally - but for what you REALLY ARE, even in your
everyday life, in your associations with people. You are one
of those men who LIVE, rather than BRAG about, their religion
or goodness.
With kindest personal regards to every one of you, I am
Sincerely, EC:GD

Cayce Hospital,
Virginia Beach, Virginia
My dear Mr. [
257]
At the request of Mrs. [
189] I am sending Mr. [
2597]'s
medical statements to you at Virginia Beach.
It is a real joy to see a man, so useful, so big hearted, so
capable, and above all a friend, snatched from death, as it
were, and apparently restored to health. I frankly confess
that it was little short of a miracle, as practically 95% of
such cases of streptococcic infection do not survive. We
doctors do not take the credit; I feel that a Higher Power
directed the case.
I am naturally extremely interested in Mr. Cayce and his
work. Some of these days I hope to run up to Virginia Beach
to see him and the hospital.
With warm personal regards to you, also to Mrs. [
189] and our
mutual friend, Mr. [
2597] I am
Sincerely yours, [signed] Bernard R. Smith
GD's note: Case [
2597] was prepared by Hugh Lynn Cayce to be
used in the book THERE IS A RIVER by Thomas Sugrue, but it
was not chosen to be included in the six cases published in
1942 in the back of the book.
5/45 Case [
2597] was published as a Case Study of
STREPTOCOCCUS INFECTION, in mimeographed form. See under
Source File Key #2597 for the case study re 2597-8.
10/13/52 Comment by D. H. Fogel, M.D. (heart specialist)
to GD:
"This Case [
2597] represents an old rheumatic heart disease
with residual valve scarring. In July 1929 he developed
fever of unknown etiology. During hospitalization in Atlanta
there was a positive blood culture for streptococci. This is
highly suggestive of the diagnosis sub-acute bacterial
endocarditis. (This, prior to the penicillin era, was a 99%
mortality disease.)
"Response was obtained with the EC regimen and apparent,
complete sterilization of the blood stream.
"However, the patient apparently began to have evidences of
cardiac insufficiency and was subsequently placed on
digitalis by his local physician.
"Upon EC's recommendation [
2597-6] the combination of
quinine, muriated iron and rhubarb was taken and digitalis
gradually stopped."
