2/29/52 Reply to questionnaire-letter: "The foundation once
more demonstrates its psychic abilities! Your letter arrived
at the exact moment of the greatest change in our lives in 11
years. My husband, [
5163], has received immediate orders to
to the west coast, and we are now in the throes of trying to
separate ourselves from the years accumulations. Our attic
is filled to the brim with items of no earthly use to us, but
from which we can hardly bear to part! To try to tell you
about us, [my husband, [
5163], my son [
2869]] who and what
and why we are, is beyond my scope at any time, but in my
present state of utter confusion, an absolute impossibility.
Unfortunately, our readings are packed away at the bottom of
a box of books, but trying to recall them, I would say that
either they are perfect sketches of our inner beings, or we
have patterned our lives to fit the given description. My
husband is [...]. My son [
2869]. I'm the same old me you
knew those years ago. You asked about my past - or our past.
Please ask [
2390] for that. It was a time of trial and error
for me, and my young years were of such upheaval that, in my
efforts to put the past behind me, I succeeded to the point
that my mind has retained only the general impression of fire
and brimstone. Since, at one time or another, [
2390] has
heard the story she can outline it fairly well for you, and
probably it would be less warped, coming from someone else.
Please tell her that she has my full consent, for the sake of
the records. My readings (and this is really a confession!)
always seemed to me to be too wonderful to be true.
Secretly, I have always felt that it couldn't really be so -
that I couldn't actually have been at the heights indicated.
There are two me's, I think. Being self-analytical, I know
that my mind has depths, and I know that I've had proof of a
psychic power within me. But, on the other hand, I'm never
free of self-criticism, of a feeling of ineptitude. I used
to feel, in the schoolroom, and in my first jobs, that I was
just very lucky to have given the right answer, or to have
done the work right. And I was always sure that someone,
someday, would find out what a failure I really was! To put
it briefly, I'd say I was half-conceit and half one of the
worst inferiority complexes on record! My attempts at
self-analysis are affected at this writing by the receipt,
within the past hour, of two very wonderful and very
flattering recommendations from my bosses, to whom I have
this afternoon given notice. There, now! I've told you many
things that perhaps I could never reveal except in such a
disturbed frame of mind as I am at this time. I think of you
and of the work you are doing, and wish you every success and
happiness. Keep at it. With deep affection for all.
P.S. I'm originally Christian Science, now Methodist."
