2/15/44 [
2946]'s letter to son and daughter-in-law:
Dear [
5070] and [
3188]
It was surely nice to hear your voice today, [
5070], and to
know [
3188] is better. I surely appreciate your going to all
that trouble. It was a relief to know the reading had been
taken as well as what it said.
Of course I believe that illness is a confession of failure.
An operation should not be necessary. I don't even think it
is necessary if I could get out of the Light and let it in.
All our mix-ups, physical and mental, are sins some place.
The important thing is not to get out of pain or to get rid
of the illness but to get rid of the cause. Tomorrow night
I plan to go in to Chicago with your Dad and I'll go over to
the University of Chicago clinic and have the once-over. The
Savanna doctor - Dr. Hussy - was here today to see some girls
and I had to see him about an infected eye. Talked with him
a bit about my skippy heart etc. and he thought the trouble
could probably be regulated with hypos of hormones. No doubt
they would help. What I'd like to do is to work on my own
soul the next few days and see whether it is possible to make
the improvement from that end. If the hospital thought we
should wait a week or so for the operation, I wonder if
Mr. Cayce would check again at the end of that time and see
whether I've made sufficient progress. I think the
Information would be the first to say it is possible - and
the first to report progress. Evidently there is no great
rush although I won't put off the operation very long.
Do you want to help me? Imagine being able to turn to some
of one's own family! It really moves me to tears. Never
happened to me before. Of course we ought to be able to come
to one another's assistance and make the grade at a time like
this. The thing to pray for is not eradication of pain, I'm
sure, but actual revelation of the underlying sin.
Forgiveness brings the healing.
I will have to use some will power, too, not to be involved
in "things". Duties seem very many here as long as one can
be and going at all. We had several faculty members in for
lunch today with Dr. Young - who has now gone on. Had a
faculty dinner last night at the hotel. A tea in West Hall
again this afternoon.
It's an adventure - and exciting - to have something like a
definitely planned operation to work on, isn't it. I bet
that prayer group there would help, too. Maybe Mr. Cayce
won't see the point in another check reading but I think he
will. In fact, he would probably be the best prayer of all
of us. If I could see the financial end of an operation I
might just take it as the easiest way out of pain. But it
always seems as if our sins boomerang back on someone else
who has to help pay the bill. Well, I'll let you know what
turns up in Chicago - and I'll be waiting to see the reading
and hear from you.
If you ever have to phone again I'd be grateful if you'd pay
for it at your end and let me send the money to you. Your
Dad was flabbergasted at the call today and he will die when
he finds out about yesterdays.
Thanks a heap and much love. Mom
