3/22/43 Father's letter to EC:
..., West Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Replying to your letter of March 19 regarding our daughter
[
2948]. The date you have set for physical reading 1st of
April 10:30 to 11:30 EWT in the morning will be
satisfactory with us. [
2948] will be here at home in her
room alone, downstairs at ..., West Virginia at that time.
She as well as my wife and I will be in a receptive and
responsive mood. I have read the booklet that came with the
application also the book of your life. I feel that I know
under what conditions you are able to be the most helpful.
[
2948] is eleven years old now. She was stricken with
Infantile Paralysis October 1940. She was affected in both
legs; both arms; back; abdomen; and shoulders; in all about
ninety muscles. She has improved a great deal considering
the extent she was affected. Her right leg is about normal;
many of the other muscles have improved but she is still in a
bad condition. Her arms and wrists are bad; abdomen muscles
are still weak; back muscles on right side weak; hip muscles
tight on left side; left leg muscles tight from hip to ankle;
ankle weak and shoulder muscles are weak.
She was treated by the orthodox method at first, kept quiet
in splints in bed for three weeks during the contagious
period. After the three weeks we brought her home and my
wife used her best judgement in exercising and massaging and
using the infra-heat lamp. June 1943 and October 1943 we
took her to Minneapolis to see Sister Kenny. We have been
using her method since June. Miss Kenny's method is
primarily for the treatment in the early stages and of course
[
2948] has not responded very well. My wife continues to
give her exercises and massage with camphor oil, winter-green
and olive oil along with the heat lamp. She keeps her in bed
for several hours each day. [
2948] can walk with a brace on
her left leg and she also requires a back brace with a sort
of girdle over her abdomen to support those muscles.
QUESTIONS?
1. What treatments, diets, massages, etc., should be given to
help remedy these conditions and make her stronger?
2. How often should we have check readings?
3. We have permitted her to swim in salt water pool and have
had a trained physiotherapist to give her physiotherapy
treatments; should we continue these and how often?
4. What should be done to improve the circulation of the
affected leg?
5. It is our intention to take her to Florida in September
and allow her to bathe in salt water and have access to more
sunlight than we have here; should we change these plans?
Trusting the above covers all that you wanted to know about
our girl.
Sincerely [...]
P.S. We have four boys age four to fifteen in addition to
[
2948] all are very healthy and we are all praying that
[
2948] will be too.
