3/08/43 Letter from [
2956]'s daughter: "...I have only just
learned of your great and inspired work for suffering
humanity and hearing about it seems an answer to our prayers
for Mother who suffers great pain and is, I am convinced,
very ill from some growing disease within her body.
"She is the bravest woman I know and, as all good mothers
are, is the very pivot around which her whole family
revolves, as well as the guiding spirit for many another.
She has faced many troubles and operations as well as
illnesses with serene courage, and I want, more than anything
else except perhaps peace for the whole troubled world, to
help her stay well and strong to enjoy her grandchildren
(which she has always longed to see ever since I can
remember!)
"If you can give her one of your readings I would be so
grateful and so careful to follow the advice you give, if
only there may be that advice!..."
3/19/43 Letter from [
2956]'s daughter: "...I know that you
have many, many such requests and I ask that this reading be
as soon as possible. I am terribly afraid there is not a
great deal of time left for her and I know you can help..."
3/29/43 Letter from [
2956]'s daughter: "...Thank you so much
for your kind and helpful note... Mother has not been away
for more than a year but is very anxious to go with my sister
to visit a girl whom mother dearly loves... This girl lives
in ..., D.C. and that is where mother will be barring any
unforeseen emergency... Mother has had to stay in bed so
much this whole winter that we all wanted her to have this
little outing... You spoke of any questions to be asked and
I would like to know especially about restrictions of diet
and of daily activities, although it may be that those items
will be covered in the reading, as all the ones I have read
that you have given seem very complete. Her doctor in Milton
has been especially concerned about her heart, which has been
never too strong, and she has been, and is still taking
digitalis for the heart condition. He cannot tell why she
has these dreadful attacks of pain (she had a brief one on
Sunday last) and he feels it is more than just the gall
bladder trouble he had told her about. She had a kidney
stone removed after a painful session with that several years
ago, and she has had two breast operations also.
"She had suffered so much and so courageously so many times
in her life and never complains or asks anything for herself.
I would gladly give all I earn to give her a well and happy
summer in the garden she loves so well..."
REPORTS
4/24/43 Letter from [
2956]'s daughter: "...You were so good
to write me after the reading... We came last Sunday to ...,
Pa. and to Dr. Dick as the reading suggested and are staying
for the suggested time. Dr. Dick is a very grand person and
has already given both mother and me much confidence and
hope. I will report to you again before the six weeks are up
and I would be very grateful if sometime following the six
weeks you could give a check reading on mother's progress so
we may follow up any gains..."
4/28/43 EC's reply: "Do hope that your mother responds
nicely to the treatments. We will get a check reading in a
few weeks. Hope you are pleased with Dr. Dick. I have never
met her but am told she is a very fine person..."
5/15/43 Letter from Dr. Dick: "...She made remarkable
improvement the first two weeks, gained 5-3/4 lbs...she had
lost 60 lbs. during the last year. But on May 9th she had
one of her severe attacks of pain in the abdomen. She had
been getting them every Sunday since last November, but the
treatments, or something, kept her free so that she was
happy without any attacks for almost four weeks. Since 1928
she has had three major operations for carcinoma of the
breast and pelvis, and heavy doses of radium and X-ray. She
has also passed kidney stones and an X-ray two years ago
showed gall bladder stones. Her pains are terrific when she
gets them. She is at Mrs. Elizabeth Foehle's Nursing
Home..."
"1. What causes the attacks? Are gallstones the only cause,
or is there a growth anywhere in stomach or intestines?
2. Can they be averted by diet? 3. What should be avoided
in the diet, other than fats? 4. Should butter and milk be
excluded, as well as spices and highly seasoned foods?
5. Are there more gallstones, or did they pass with last
weeks' violent attacks? 6. How is the liver? 7. What
causes so much gas, and the stomach to swell and hard lumps
appear, especially one place directly above the navel?
8. In what condition is the heart? Is it the heart which
causes short-breathing spells and a very rattlely condition
in the throat at times, especially during an attack?..."
5/15/43 Note from Dr. Dick: "...Mrs. [
2956] herself wrote
the above questions. In replying could you answer privately
to me: 9. Is her time on this earth drawing to a close?
10. Should she continue with the digitalis? (I took her off
of it.) 11. Will it be wise for her to leave for home on May
28, 1943? 12. Will the treatments give permanent relief from
the pain or be a palliatives only? 13. What should she do
when she returns home? 14. What will give her the best
relief for her heart attacks and for her abdominal pain?..."
