This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 3rd day of September, 1943, in accordance with request made by the mother, Mrs. [5236], new Associate Member of the Ass'n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by her sister, Mrs. [2678].

TEXT

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
2. EC: Yes.
3. That there are those conditions preventing the normal activities of the body is indicated from the outward conditions, as to the influences causing the lack of coordination between the cerebrospinal and the sympathetic nervous system.
4. Thus the inability of the body to control its activities at times, also the tendency for the activities upon the body to produce abnormal reactions at times.
5. While there are many variations as to time and how the activities of the blood supply reflect in the activity of the body, these should be controlled in a measure; preferably by suggestion as the body is ready to sleep, and this not other than just arousing in the subconscious self needs for constructive forces, spiritual and mental in the body.
6. Then each day, - not one day and skip two or three, or two or three days and then skip one or two, - read with the body many portions of the thirtieth chapter of Deuteronomy. Do analyze and make practical applications of those tenets and truths that are given in the fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth of John.
7. Let this be done consistently each day, while the Radio-Active Appliance is connected to the body - which will tend to equalize circulation, and with the equalizing of circulation will come those activities with the bone fissures and structure of the body; provided there is the consistent application of foods that would be body-building.
8. Attach the Appliance each evening when ready to retire, for at least an hour; during which period the suggestions would be made as indicated.
9. This done for this particular body will add much to its ability to control its appetite, its reactions through the nerve and blood plasma, as well as aiding those administrations that have been made on and about the body.
10. Each evening when the Appliance is removed, give the body a gentle massage along the spine with this combination of oils:

    Cedar Wood Oil,
as the basic principle..........3 ounces,
Oil of Peanuts.....................1 ounce,
Olive Oil..........................1 tablespoonful,
Lanolin, (melted or dissolved).....1 teaspoonful.

11. Do this immediately after the use of the Appliance. Begin at the 9th dorsal and work upward towards the head. Then begin at the 9th dorsal and go downward, either side of the spine, including the lower limbs and going downward or away from the body.
12. Do these for the better conditions of the body.
13. After these have been applied consistently for ten weeks, we would give other suggestions.
14. Ready for questions.
15. (Q) Should he eat more in between meals and less at meal time? (His appetite is large at meal times, though he eats very little between meals and takes very little muscle building exercise.)
    (A) Best that most be taken at meal time. A minor portion may be taken between meals.
16. (Q) He takes very little muscle building exercise. What exercise would you suggest?
    (A) This, as indicated should be very much stimulated by the use of the massage each day, just after the Appliance and the suggestive period.
    Attempting the use of self and the limbs is the better activity; not too much as a strain but as those opportunities to fulfill better purposes in its life.
17. (Q) Is it important for him to lose weight?
    (A) Not important, but with the equalizer (Radio-Active Appliance) and the massage, he should lose - in ten to twelve weeks - a dozen pounds or more.
18. (Q) Should he be forced to keep with the children in his class at school, in lessons or play?
    (A) If this becomes obnoxious to the entity because of feeling the difference, don't force it upon him. The attitude of the body should ever be constructively applied.
19. (Q) What is the best thing to do for his hearing?
    (A) This is included in all of these indicated.
20. (Q) What causes the gritting of teeth at night, for past two months?
    (A) Those tendencies for the activities through the stomach to become active in themselves, causing this activity - which is not unnatural.
    But the body should be given Glyco-Thymoline as an intestinal antiseptic, as an aid for keeping alkalinity in the body so that it will not become unbalanced. This will be most helpful. Give one to three drops in water after the morning meal, two to three drops after the noon meal, and two drops after the evening meal.
21. (Q) Any special foods he should take or avoid?
    (A) Take most everything, but do avoid combinations of starches at the same meal; for instance: White potatoes or white bread, or spaghetti - no two of these would be taken at any one meal, though each of these may be taken occasionally but not ever in combination.
    Do take a great deal of raw vegetables, lettuce, celery, radishes, tomatoes, carrots. All of these, or portions of these taken each day, may aid a great deal in the glandular forces and in control of the sympathetic nervous system.
22. (Q) What caused or brought about this condition originally?
    (A) High temperature in the body. Do these things and we will make for better conditions for this body.

1. 9/14/43 [3193]'s mother's letter to EC:
   "...Your Reading...arrived Sept. 7th.
   "I was very much surprised that in your Reading you did not mention that [3193] has a heart condition, which every doctor that has seen him has mentioned...
   "I am enclosing a copy of a report made by a heart specialist to the physician we had here at that time and would like to know if you are still of the same opinion about [3193] after reading this enclosed report and also IF I should try to follow your suggestions as mentioned in the Reading of Sept. 3rd.
   "About the Appliance to be used: The folder you sent about it prices the Appliance for $18.50. I'd like to be able to buy one but at the present time cannot afford it. Would it be possible to rent one by the month?
   "Would appreciate hearing from you at your earliest convenience telling me WHETHER OR NOT your Reading indicates that [3193] has a heart condition and if so of what nature?..."
2. Arthur C. DeGraff, M.D.'s Report on [3193] referred to in letter of 9/14/43 from [3193]'s mother [Par. 1 above]:
   On July 30, 1937, I saw a little boy, [3193] who is a patient of yours. His mother brought him to me for an examination of his heart.
   FAMILY HISTORY: No history of heart disease in the family. One older brother is said to have some kidney trouble.
   HISTORY: When only a couple of days old the patient was found to be somewhat short of breath. At six months of age a definite murmur was discovered. At the age of two years he had pneumonia and made an uneventful recovery. Has had measles, chicken pox, whooping cough. Has never had rheumatism or growing pains. For several weeks he has had short bouts of fever. His tonsils were examined while still in Florida and was advised to have them out. Recently he had a tuberculin test and blood count and these were found to be normal. He has had no fever for ten days. He is quite active and plays about as a normal child. At the present time he does not appear to have any discomfort.
   Physical Examination: Age, 4 1/2. Weight, 33 1/4 pounds. Height, 40 1/2 inches. General condition appears to be that of a healthy boy. Teeth are in fairly good condition. No lymph nodes are palpable in the neck. HEART: The apex beat is palpable in the fifth space, 6 1/2 cm. to the left of the midline, within the midclavicular line. The rhythm is regular. The rate is 118 per minute. The first sound at the apex is of good quality. P2 is greater than A2. There are no murmurs. The blood pressure is 88/60. A very loud systolic murmur is heard over the entire precordial area. The murmur is loudest over the pulmonic area. There is a rough systolic thrill over the base. The electrocardiogram was normal. The fluoroscopic examination showed a slight general enlargement of the heart. The liver and spleen are not felt. There is no edema of the lower extremities. There was no cyanosis noticeable and there was no clubbing of the fingers.
   DISCUSSION: From this examination and from the history it would seem that we are dealing here with a congenital heart disease. The lesion is probably a pulmonary stenosis. Apparently it is not severe enough to produce any considerable interference with the mechanical efficiency of the heart. Otherwise there would be some cyanosis and clubbing of the fingers. I see no reason why this child should not at the present time engage in normal activity. He should, however, about once a year, have his heart examined so comparative records can be made to see whether there is any progressive enlargement. As far as his heart is concerned there is no reason why he should not have his tonsils out if they are diseased. I think that should be left up to the nose-and-throat man who examines him. If the tonsils are diseased they should be removed.
   I am enclosing a copy of the electrocardiogram and orthodiagram for your files...
3. 9/21/43 EC's letter to [3193]'s mother:
   "...Thank you for yours of the 14th. I note what you have to say, also the report. I think from past experiences and from the information, all of these have been taken into consideration and is why such an appliance as suggested was indicated. The theory of its activity is that it creates a normal balance of circulation through the body and naturally with its use, if it is done properly, would make the real correction so the body would grow up normally, for you see, the vibration would loosen any lesion in any portion of the body, for it is supposed to work with changing the vibration to normalcy in the body.
   "You will have to ask the man who builds them, whether you can rent one or not. They are handmade, but he does not make them for the money in it.
   "Do by all means use it just as it directs. Do keep the plates clean and disconnect it when not in use. Thanking you and hoping to be of a service..."
4. 9/28/43 [3193]'s mother's letter to EC:
   "...I've been trying to collect the necessary things for treatments as you have suggested for [3193].
   "On inquiring about the Cedar Wood Oil, I have found that I can get only one ounce of double distilled Cedar Wood Oil at the drugstore. Also inquired at the hardware store but was told that they have never carried it and don't know whether they can get it or not. Is the DOUBLE DISTILLED Cedar Wood Oil what you want me to use and could you let me know where I might find it?
   "In the Reading you said 'to begin at the 9th dorsal and work upward towards the head. Then begin at the 9th dorsal and work downward either side of the spine including the lower limbs and going downward or away from body'. I have never done any massaging and I don't know where to locate the 9th dorsal on the spine. In counting to locate the 9th dorsal does one count down to the 9th or up to the 9th? Please let me know specifically where it is.
   "[3193] has just told me that the boy who sits behind him in school has mumps. So [3193] will probably have them before long. If I am giving these treatments before he develops mumps, should I continue during that time?
   "I don't like to bother you but am at a loss to know what to do and of course do want to get started as soon as possible..."
5. 10/08/43 EC's letter to [3193]'s mother:
   "...Replying to yours of the 28th, I am sorry to know that you are having trouble getting the ingredients for the young man. I think, though, that you can go to your local osteopath, chiropractor, or your MD; either will point out to you on the boy's spine just where the ninth dorsal is located. It is almost opposite the stomach, or about the middle of the back. Yes, continue the treatments throughout the period if he has the mumps, and it will help. The massaging of the spine will possibly save him a whole lot of trouble. Don't think that you are being of a bother. If there is something you don't understand, don't fail to ask. Your druggist should be able to get most of these things for you. It may take a little time, to be sure, but he will order them from whatever wholesale drug house that is necessary.
   "Let us hear from you from time to time as to how you get along.
   "Thanking you, and hoping to be the means of a service..."
6. 10/12/43 [3193]'s mother's letter to EC:
   "...I received your letter of Oct. 8th ([3193]'s birthday) yesterday, which was in answer to mine of Sept. 28th. Since writing that letter I have been able to get the ingredients needed.
   "However, before I start with treatments I would like to have several things cleared up about the Reading and maybe I can convince Mr. [...] that there is 'something' to the Reading. It will be so much easier if he has confidence and is cooperating in it.
   "First, in the Reading you said that the notes were 'read to and translated by Jeanette Fitch.' In some of your other Readings, which I have seen, I did not notice that the notes were 'read to and translated by' anyone. I understood that the Reading would be your words just as you had said them. So I do not understand why it had to be translated.
   "Next, in paragraphs 1 and 2 of Reading: (1) 'That there are those conditions preventing the normal activities of the body is indicated from the outward conditions, as to the influences causing the lack of coordination between the cerebrospinal and the sympathetic nervous system.' (2) 'Thus the inability of the body to control its activities at times, also the tendency for the activities upon the body to produce abnormal reactions at times'.
   "I have quoted the above from paragraphs 1 and 2 of the Reading and I do not understand what you mean by 'those conditions'. In other words, you do not say what the conditions ARE but only say what they cause. Is it a heart condition; if not, what is it? If so, is it serious and can it be overcome? (I've been told various things about his heart by doctors and have worried a great deal about it so that is why I had a Reading for him.)
   "I have not been aware of activities of the body not being normal as indicated from outward conditions (?) which you mentioned in par. 1 and par. 2 of the Reading. Please explain what is meant by this as [3193] seems normal in his activities or actions.
   "Page 2, paragraph 1 of the Reading says to 'analyze and make practical applications of those tenets and truths that are given in 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th chapters of John'. Here I need a lot of help, too, as I have never read the Bible much because I couldn't understand it. However, I have read these as you suggested but do not know how to analyze and make practical application'. Please tell me what to do.
   "I have started with Glyco-Thymoline but can only give it to him after morning and night meals as he has his mid-day meal at school. Is this alright or should it be done otherwise?
   "You said high temperature brought about this condition originally. Does this mean he had fever caused by infection? Doctors say he has a congenital heart.
   "You see I really do not know from the Reading what is exactly the trouble with [3193] and want to FULLY KNOW and UNDERSTAND before I start with treatments. I just feel like I'd be working 'in the dark'.
   "I would appreciate an answer at your very earliest convenience so that I might get started with treatments when the appliance comes which has been sent for.
   "Thanking you for your patience and interest..."
   "P.S. What would be the earliest you could give me a Reading for myself? [See 5236-1] Am enclosing stamps for booklets: LIFE & WORK OF EDGAR CAYCE; CHILD TRAINING."
7. 10/19/43 EC's letter to [3193]'s mother:
   "I have yours of the 12th and 15th. I am glad to know that you have been able to get the needed ingredients for [3193]'s treatment. Regarding the question about the 'translated', this really meant that she is one of the stenographers who writes down what is said at the time of the reading, verbatim, therefore, is not a translator, but a transcriber of what is said at the time of the reading. You may be very sure that we will never send you a translation of someone unless it was indicated.
   "Then the condition has indicated 'that there are those conditions preventing the normal activities of the body is indicated from the outward conditions, as to the influences causing the lack of coordination between the cerebrospinal and the sympathetic nervous system. Thus the inability of the body to control its activities at times, also the tendency for the activities upon the body to produce abnormal reactions at times.' [3193-1, Par. 3, 4]
   "This refers to what the information or readings called karma or activities in former lives of the individual entity itself. These, the readings hold, can be met in the spiritual attitude of the individual and those responsible for the individual's present life.
   "I understand that this is to me just a theory of the reading, but it has been presented so many times in which we have seen results in the life of the individuals when the spiritual attitude of others, as well as the body, has brought about the change. It is not a physical condition at all, but one of incoordination between the mental and spiritual bodies, and the physical bodies. I hope you will get the meaning of this for I fully appreciate that it would be 'working in the dark' unless you understood something of what you were working with and for.
   "Paragraph 4 of the reading is trying to explain to you just the above condition. Of course, if you will read the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th of John, you will find there are a great many promises made that have quite a number of very definite facts stated as to the relationship to an individual, as to the Christ's consciousness, and it is this consciousness that you are having to deal with. Read these and with the idea in your mind that it is the Master talking to you, for that is what He really means in it. True, at the time He was speaking to His disciples, who were present with Him, but we recall that He said, 'Who is My mother, who is My brother, who is My sister; they that do the will of the Father, the same is My mother, My brother, My sister.' And that means everyone of us. Unless we do His will, we are far from Him. And what is His will? As He reminds us often, 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, all thy mind and all thy soul, and thy neighbor as thyself.'
   "This, then, is not a thing that is far off. It is a practical thing that we live day by day. Yes, I think you handle the Glyco-Thymoline in the way that you are, will be satisfactory.
   "According to the information, it was sometime that he had a temperature that brought about all of these conditions. I believe that if you will keep up the rubs and all the suggestions that have been indicated, you will really find help. Of course, you don't have to accept the readings - you or Mr. [...]. You can take the doctor's word. I think you have the cause if you will accept it. The earliest period possible for a reading for you would be sometime in April or May, provided that you ask for the appointment very soon, for we are receiving about three times as many requests for readings as we are able to give and our regular appointments are more than 12 months in advance already.
   "We are sending you under separate cover THE LIFE AND WORK OF EDGAR CAYCE, CHILD TRAINING, and AM I MY BROTHER'S KEEPER?
   "Thanking you for your letter and hoping that we may be of a real service..."
8. 10/28/43 [3193]'s mother's letter to EC:
   "...I received your letter of Oct. 19th in answer to mine of Oct. 12th. Also the booklets - THE LIFE & WORK OF EDGAR CAYCE, CHILD TRAINING, and AM I MY BROTHER'S KEEPER? This last one I did not send for but am glad you sent it so am enclosing stamps for it. Thank you.
   "I started giving [3193] his treatments Oct. 26th. The ten-week period will be up on JAN. 5th. You said you would give him a Check reading at the end of ten-week's period so thought it best to let you know just when that would be so you can put that date as a Check reading for him. (Please let me know.)
   "I have asked both my physician and an osteopath to show me where the 9th dorsal is and neither has given me any satisfactory answer so I have tried to locate it myself. Will take him to another osteopath or chiropractor the first opportunity I have. In the meantime, will do the best I can.
   "In your letter of Oct. 19th you said you could give me a Reading in April or May if I let you know very soon. Am enclosing check and application and trust that you will give me a Reading in April or May if not sooner..."
   [GD's note: EC later gave the Physical reading for her - see 5236-1. However, the Check Physical appointment for the child, [3193], had to be cancelled due to EC's illness.]
