Mrs. [

... Illinois
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Thank you for your letter of July 8 - and the appointment is
of course quite all right - the 19th of October from 3:30 to
4:30 Eastern War Time.
I was so glad to have the material on the Congress and the
letter from Mr. Sugrue about his plans to write more books.
I will look forward to them with the greatest interest.
About the questions - they come into my mind helter skelter.
My trouble is to sort them out, to put them in clear form.
For instance, one reason Mr. Sugrue's plans interest me so
much is that I have a writing problem of my own. Once I
began to see that this world wasn't the end - this world of
the senses and of materialism that is - that it wasn't all -
I tried to find as much of the Truth as I could. I studied
new Thought and read the Bible and practiced sporadically
what I learned. But my writing seemed a thing apart from my
new found faith - it came as if of its own volition, and it
was mordant and bitter, speptical; casting a shadow and not a
light. The characters I depicted were a sorry, even a
sinister lot for the most part. It wasn't at all what I
wanted to write - so - the question is - what shall I do with
my talent for writing novels?
Now I have stopped writing my third novel. I wait for
light. I am not going to do as I did before, let the book
come out like an explosion and then look at it in amazement
and some dismay. I note in the book CHILD TRAINING which I
read and re-read, that one reading says, "There is often a
real purpose in the soul, ...seeking a period of expression
of self..." One of my questions would be, Has my soul a real
purpose in entering the earth, and is that purpose being
fulfilled? Am I to go on writing? Go on with this novel
trusting it to develop in a way different from the others? I
would give a great deal to be able to say as Mr. Sugrue says,
"I write nothing that does not carry a message. I get the
work into everything." To integrate the ideal and the
talent, that is true joy. If it is right I want to manage
this in this time - but how? My writing is innocent of any
and all messages, except those implied in materialism -
You see it seem hard to couch to my questions in the right
form so that they may be more easily answered. Shall I sent
them in a separate letter?
I would know whatever it is possible to know about my son,
[...]. "[...]" ran way from his ship, the ..., as I told
you. He always wrote to us no matter what else he did or
didn't do.
Whatever has happend to him, whatever his mistakes, they are
our fault, we his parents are to blame. We didn't believe in
anything but expediency and self aggrandizement when he was
in his formative period. Since we've had no word since 1941,
we can only think our [...] is dead. Because otherwise we
know he would somehow get word to us. For all the way we
were to him he loved us intensely. I have had two messages
one that seemed to come from him, the other about him, that
he was in great distress and was praying constantly. I asked
how I might help and the answer came, "How can you help?"
So that is a question I would ask for my reading if it is a
suitable question - How can I help...? - where is he? can I
reach him? His distress, his pain, whereever he may be - it
is mine, too. I have come here to ... to be with my husband.
He has gotten into difficulties financially, and is trying to
make up for the past - a question I would ask if how I can
best help him. Whether the way I am taking now is the right
way or whether it would be best to take a war job and help
him financially to get his difficulties solved. I wonder if
that question could be answered?
Often I wonder, - but this one question seems to have no real
bearing that I can see on my life now - still I do wonder
sometimes about my parents - who they were - whether they
still live on earth - have I met them unknowingly - did they
try to find the "foundling door step baby?" why did I never
know them? Was that in a plan?
Then -
Whenever I would share what light I have with friends, I am
blocked. You see - even as a child I resented with all my
heart and all my mind any and all forms of church service.
I had to go with my foster parents to church and Sunday
School and Christian Endeavour and Wednesday night prayer
meetings, and I still remember how uncomfortable it made me
when people "testified" or prayed out loud, and how I
squirmed and rebelled inwardly when mother or father arose to
pray. I hated it. It was torture, and as soon as I could I
turned away from all of it.
Now, sometimes I am moved to "testify" a little but the
memory of the embarrassment I used to feel may be what holds
me back. Only a few weeks ago an old friend asked me what
had changed me, made me seem young and trusting and happy. I
told her I had come to believe in God. She said, "Oh, no!
you don't. You can't - not you - it isn't possible."
I told her I did believe - she has read Mr. Sugrue's book - I
said I could accept the chapter on your philosophy. And I
convinced her that I did believe, and that accounted for the
change she noticed. But I've often thought that perhaps I
wasn't intended to talk about it - that somehow, since I am a
writer I should be able to write the message. So that is
another question - how this may best be accomplished.
I started out in this letter to speak of the booklet you sent
on World Affairs. Our older son is off now to one of the
many fronts. He has been long in England, and England seems
to be his spiritual home. He feels at home in their
tradition of training their young men for government service
and hopes when the war is over to come back to the United
States and be of some use to his people, to serve that is in
some governmental capacity. Will he be able to do this -
make use of what he has learned? Again, questions about
members of one's family may not be proper. Believe me, I am
not trying to get more that what is right for one reading.
Oh, Mr. Cayce, I wish with all my heart I had known long ago
when my children were small, what is in the book on Child
Training! If somehow I could share my beliefs -
These all seem to be problems, not really questions, and if
you think best I can boil it all down to questions -
Thank you [

REPORTS
11/01/43 [
3307]'s ltr. to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
May I say thank you now for the reading. I received my copy
a week ago. Already it has helped me.
The enclosed $2 is to be applied wherever you see fit.
There's so little it won't be much of a decision! I'd like
to become an Active member of the Association, please. Would
that be possible?
May I have a copy of the pamphlet EGYPTIAN Eleven Thousand
B.C. when there's one available?
On Page 15 of the Life Readings Booklet, I note: "The
Association needs more detailed reports on the Individual
Life Readings. We understand the mental and emotional
reactions are hard to describe..."
Now this I can do - I've had practice describing mental and
emotional reactions. Every writer uses himself first as
material - I think better with a typewriter in front of me, a
pencil in my hand. So - when the Life Reading came, I picked
up pencil and pad and made a commentary as I read. And then,
this past week, as I went about my work, I made notes a [of]
various things the Life Reading brought to my mind. Some of
these comments make a detailed report, and may be useful to
the Association for their files or in any way you see fit to
use them.
If you like, I will send you the notes and keep on making
the notes I have and will keep on making them to send.
I have a great deal to say, but I will put it in the notes.
The Bulletin with the lovely verse, and the horoscope of
Edgar Cayce came. Thank you.
Sincerely, and again, my thanks -

Dear Mr. Cayce:
Thank you for your letter of the 25th of January setting an
appointment for a physical reading. I enclose the form
filled out for Miss White.
The weekly bulletins are wonderful to have and study.
I wish to thank you too for my Life Reading. It is to be
studied and pondered, as each time I study it prayerfully a
little extra light on its meaning seems to show - (well I'm
getting mixed up, but I'm sure you know what I am trying to
say.) The advice given in the Reading will be of the
greatest help to me in my work - writing. So far - since I
have come here to ..., I have not been able to write anything
much at all. I have the time it isn't that - frankly I don't
know what it is. For a time I felt that perhaps I was not
intended to do any more writing at all since certainly I had
misused the talent I had been given. But the Life Reading
counsels me and gives me a prayer to pray. So - in due time
the story will be there to be written. I am sure of this
and sure too the story will be in keeping with this new
knowledge given in the Reading.
I have been able to do so little in return for all the Life
Reading and membership in the Association have done for me.
At least I have been responsible for two sales of the book.
I notice in January Bulletin, Vol. Xll, no. 4, that the note
on Active Memberships suggest something I might be able to do
- its number 8 - " writing or lecturing on psychic
development." Not lecturing. Writing. "You'd probably have
to do a good deal of studying first!" Right they are. I
would. But I can read - I have time, some intelligence and a
retentive memory. Also a talent for writing so that people
like to read what I write. If someone in the Association has
a suggestion about what I'd better read first I'll be
grateful. I don't think I AM an active member, but I'm going
to act as If I were one and hope one day to pay up the
membership!
Will you ask Miss white to send me the following booklets -
The Last Supper, Meditation, The Essenes, and the Physical
Case Studies, the mimeograph on the Common Cold? Then some
day I hope to get the Bible study notes. I have the list of
publications now, and I will send a check to cover these I
have asked for, along with my contribution to the
Sponsorship -
Thank you again - will send money later.
Sincerely, [

Dear Mr. Cayce:
One of the recent bulletins suggest that those of us who can
solve their own problems try to do so, and postpone
appointments for further reading until 1945.
This I would like to do, cancel the appointment for a
physical reading to be given the morning of July 7, 10:30 to
11:30 W.W.T. - this is the reading offered in the letter of
25 Jan.
The Life Reading you were so kind as to give me in October,
suggests a certain Way, and says, "those things that have
caused doubt, fear, disturbance - in mental and in material
things - will gradually dissipate, even as fog before the
morning sun."
My physical difficulties are all minor - neither hazardous
nor acute! I shouldn't like to be using time which might be
needed by someone suffering pain. I hope you will understand
- it is not that I wouldn't appreciate and profit by the
Physical Reading at this time.
If 1945 is not being filled too fast since the bulletin
suggested postponements, might I, sometime in 1945 have
another LIFE READING? I have questions brought up by the
answers to the original reading. I'd like to know more about
the incarnation that has the most bearing on this present
one. I cannot possibly thank you enough for that Life Read-
ing and I will send a brief of my ideas about it for the
Association Files soon. (this too was suggested by the
Bulletin.)
The ecnlosed check is to be used in any way that seems best
just now.
Sincerely, and with every good wish, [

7/19/44 Mrs. [

Miss [

Dear Gladys Davis Turner:
[
5356] says you wouldn't be able to track down "Elsie Rowell"
the name was misspelled in your letter, it is Powell, that
you wouldn't be able to do any tracking without she sent some
money which at this time she has not got. About grammer,
dear Gladys I couldn't care less.
However I place my fingers on these keys to state that
reincarnation, the whole idea of it makes me feel cross! It
is as if you were to get your child ready for kindergarten,
and half in fear and half in hope he asked WHY DO I HAVE TO
GO? You'd say it would be fun, meeting the other children,
making new friends - and he would lean interesting, helpful
things. He'd say, "what things, Mama? What things would I
learn?" You'd try to tell him, give him a little list and
let him say it forward and backward all the way to school and
you'd hope it might help him over the hump of first hours
when he felt strange and missed home, and you. All right.
But suppose instead you told him there was something he was
to learn but the instant he got into the school he would
forget what it was. He had to. You'd increase his
bewilderment as much as possible. Maybe blindfold him, put
stops in his ears, take him to the schoolyard and deposit him
there. Spin him round and round and shove him through the
door screaming. Give him a couple hard spats for good
measure and say, "be sure you don't remember be sure you
never figure out why I sent you here! Unless you're one in a
thousand lucky or unlucky enough to meet up with that saint
and seer, Mr. Edgar Cayce you'll never know. Just stumble
round as best you can if anyone hits you don't hit him back.
Turn the other cheek."
That my dear Gladys is what God or whoever you happen to
think has charge of the universe does when he or she or it
sets people on the path of reincarnation. If there's any
truth in reincarnation. Which I hope there is not. I am a
very old woman now. When I go hence I shall certainly speak
my piece anent this horror. As for the soul I hate it. The
idea. Not long ago I read in an old Searchlight about that
poor old blighter of a clergyman - he was, so the Reading
affirmed - a clergyman in the days of - I believe - the war
between the states and he kept slaves from running away and
sermoned against freeing them. And in his next life he was
rich - it seems he'd longed for riches and sold slaves or
received rewards for turning in runaways in order to obtain
money. So he was rich. But stymied, a monster, a Mongoloid
- the idea being his soul wished this on him! What a
monstrous horrible idea. I am but human with no wish to be a
saint. Yet on my enemy I would not if I could put such a
punishment. Any more than I'd send my son to be hanged.
Would you? why the whole thing is a Grimm fairy tale.
Disgusting and horrible beyond belief? you can have it for
yours, I'll have none of it. I wish MY soul goodbye! I do
hope I've misunderstood the whole matter. If there should be
God and He good, or NOT GOD and He evil, still one would not
wish to be caught out judging.
Sincerely, [
3307]
