TEXT

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3399].
3. Now as we find, there are disturbances, and these while recuperative in some manners in the present are rather complicated - and should not be.
4. These have to do with the incoordination of the central nerve and blood supply and the superficial and imaginative system. This does not indicate that the conditions are just imagination, but this does have a great deal to do with the severity - and the physical disturbances become just as great as if these were real in the functioning and organic activity.
5. These are conditions as we find them with this body:
6. The blood supply indicates that there is an upsetting of that which is assimilated through the system, or a very disturbing condition in colon and through the alimentary canal. This is partly the basis of the disturbance, yet the physical conditions that exist in structural portions of the body contribute to same; where the activities in the lumbar axis and the pelvic bones make pressures that cause distresses through the abdominal areas. Hence through the back, especially in the lower lumbars and through the sacrals we find a condition contributing to the disturbance of incoordination at the 3rd and 4th dorsal, that contributes to a catarrhal condition disturbing the organs of the sensory system.
7. These combined tend to make for the body being in distresses many times, and again when there is the necessity of the body responding it can perk itself up and be feeling fairly well. These are the conditions as we find them.
8. In going about to make helpful conditions for the body, it is true that many of those things that have been administered have been not so much of a curative nature as to test out. These, though, we would use:
9. Each day we would apply Glyco-Thymoline Packs over the areas of the lumbar and sacral. Do this for an hour each day for three days in succession. Use three thicknesses of cotton cloth saturated in Glyco-Thymoline and apply, then applying salt heat - not an electric pad. Heat heavy salt and apply over the Glyco-Thymoline Pack.
10. Then, after these have been taken for the three days, have a good, general osteopathic relaxing treatment, not stimulating but relaxing; including a relaxation throughout the dorsal and cervical area, and especially though the lumbar and sacral.
11. These we would do.
12. Then we would have the next week two or three days again of applying the Glyco-Thymoline Packs over the lumbar and dorsal area followed again with the osteopathic corrections.
13. One period each week we would have the osteopathic treatments without the Packs, and one period following the three days of applying the Packs.
14. Then we would have prepared this compound to be taken internally:

A Fusion of Wild Ginseng........1/2 ounce,
Essence of Wild Ginger..........1/4 ounce,
Elixir of Lactated Pepsin.........2 ounces.

Take half a teaspoonful each day, preferably after the evening meal.
15. When the conditions have become better through the back, through the relaxing of the body forces in the upper dorsals and cervicals, we would have osteopathic surgery (finger surgery) for raising the eustachian tubes. These are those hindrances to the hearing.
16. Do these things - be very mindful that there are the proper diets, the proper activities; not too much violent exercise but walks would be very good for the body.
17. Ready for questions.
18. (Q) What is the cause of backache and lameness in right hip and how can it be cured?
    (A) As indicated, this is an unbalance in the pelvic bones. Or a correction is needed in the lumbar axis.
19. (Q) Should I wear a stiff girdle, cast or brace for a time?
    (A) Preferably this should be of elastic, not stiff.
20. (Q) What is the cause of my colitis and how can it be cured?
    (A) This is the after effect of indiscretion and cold.
21. (Q) How can hayfever be cured or relieved?
    (A) When the corrections are made in the upper dorsal and cervical and then the cleansing of the Eustachian tubes through the finger surgery osteopathically administered, we should be rid of these disturbances or tendencies towards the occasional reaction of hay fever.
22. (Q) How could I better prepare my present state of mind and inner life to make it more conducive to a cure?
    (A) As indicated there is a great deal of effect produced upon the body through the imaginative or suggestive forces. If there is the establishing of better associations or connections physically with cerebrospinal and sympathetic, in the lumbar and sacral areas, also in the dorsal areas, and the body sets its mind to those lessons as may be gained in Deuteronomy 30, these will bring better realizations of purposes in the body or corrections for same. As ye read, let that read become active within self. Then study the 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th of John. Know that the direction is to thee, not someone 2000 years ago, but to thee.
23. (Q) Is heredity a factor in my loss of hearing?
    (A) Not necessarily, but because others have, you have the consciousness of it - it is a tendency through the suggestive forces.
24. (Q) Is it likely to be inherited by offspring?
    (A) Is you keep impressing 'em that it may, it may!
25. We are through with this reading.

BACKGROUND

1. 10/14/43 Mother [3395]'s letter: "She has what Mayo doctors diagnose as colitis and also some sort of trouble with her back which gives her backache most of the time. She is ordered to stay in bed a large part of the day and this is difficult as she is a young mother, besides being one of our staff of workers in the ... company."
2. 11/24/43 Questions submitted:
   1. What is the cause of my backache and lameness in my right hip and how can it be cured? Should I wear a stiff girdle, cast, or brace for a time? 2. What is the cause of my colitis and how can it be cured? How can it be kept from recurring? 3. How can my hay-fever be cured or relieved? 4. Is heredity responsible for my hearing loss or is it the result of sinus trouble? What can be done to restore my hearing or stop further loss? Is it likely to be inherited by offspring? 5. Is my present state of mind and inner life conducive to a cure? How could I better it? Would psychoanalysis be helpful? 6. Have I a sacro-iliac slip? What exercise would you suggest if any?
"My colitis doctor and my orthopedic (for back and hip) doctor cannot agree on whether or not I am to wear a cast, though I may be in one by the time of the reading to try it out."

REPORTS

1. 12/17/43 [3399]'s letter to EC:
   Dear Mr. Cayce
Along with returning this application which you requested I fill out, I want to send my thanks for your wonderful reading. You are truly a very marvelous person as is surely proved by my reading alone if no other - every word is truth. I know as I have said a hundred times over that I am particularly sensitive to suggestion of any kind. I believe as surely as anything that we do dreadful things to ourselves (and sometimes others, too) by our wrong thinking. Since mother taught me how to pray this fall, I feel as tho I have been leading a charmed life - AS LONG AS I KEEP IN THE GROOVE OF MY PRAYERS! The ONLY times I have suffered have been when I could not follow these. It is not an easy thing to do, I find. Pills can be swallowed in a jiffy with no effort - this is not an EASY way, but the ONLY one to real happiness!!
You might be interested to read Dr. Fink's book on RELIEF FROM NERVOUS TENSION if you have not already done so - I find it both fascinating and heartwarming to see that our thoughts are going in this direction - however the book needs a second volume to go on where the doctor leaves off + + +
   Thank you so much.
2. 2/25/44 Mother [3395]'s letter:
May I ask you one question - it is in regard to the finger surgery which you suggested for my daughter [3399]'s hearing. Is Mr. Reilly of Rockefeller Center the best one to go to for this work? My daughter lives near Chicago but knows of no one who understands this work. She is very anxious to follow out your advice and will go to New York City to have these treatments with the Reilly Health Institute if you recommend that as the best place and Mr. Reilly himself as the best operator. Is he an osteopath? She is having the spinal corrections made by an osteopath in Elgin but I believe he knows nothing of the finger surgery.
3. 3/07/44 EC's letter to Mrs. [3395]:
   Dear Mrs. [3395]
Thank you very much for your letter of February 25th.
I am glad indeed to note that the Life Reading brought something of interest and possibly information that may be really helpful.
Now in regard to your question about finger surgery. I do not feel that Dr. Reilly's Health Clinic would be the best place for finger surgery. In fact I believe the best man in the country is Dr. M. L. Richardson, Bankers Trust Bldg. Norfolk, Virginia. He was among the physicians who developed this type of surgery for conditions of the throat and palate that obstruct hearing. There are a number in Philadelphia. If you will write to Dr. Marion Dick, 5041 Spruce St. or Dr. C. Haddon Soden, 12 S. 12th St. they will give the names of a surgeon who does this work there. Both of these doctors are connected with the School of Osteopathy in Philadelphia. As I told you though, Dr. Richardson who is now in practice, is among the first to use this type of work, and this was before we knew him.
I want to thank you very much for the $100.00 check to the Living Sponsorship Fund. We hope we can keep this in shape so as to employ individuals qualified to collect data from our files and compile it in such a manner as to be made available for the members and those who are seeking.
Thanking you very very much and I wish you the best of luck.
   Sincerely, Edgar Cayce EC/gm
4. GD's note: Appointments made in July 1944 for her husband and children were cancelled due to EC's illness.
