10/25/43 Husband's letter to EC:
..., La.
Dear Mr. Cayce;
I am writing this letter in regards to the health of my
wife, Mrs. [
3462], who, is 33 years of age.
You see Dr., about five years ago, she began to show some
what of a nervous condition. She at once went to see a nerve
specialist, who diagnosed the case as glandular, and gave
her some shots, which, I think were for the Thyroid glands,
after taking six of these shots, she took an awful spell
after eating. This spell seemed, to tear, her nerves all
apart. Now Dr. at the time of this spell, I could not locate
her Doctor so, I called in another, who gave her some
medicine and said, that she would be o.k. Well, instead of
being o.k. as he had said, she grew steadily worse. It,
seemed as thought she just could not eat, after this spell,
you see, this spell, put an awful fear of eating in her, and
from then on, anything that she would eat, would upset her,
and put her in a terrible nervous state.
Now Dr., after this spell, she would not go back to her first
Dr., as she seemed to be afraid of him, and always said, that
the shots he gave her, caused this trouble.
Dr., in the last five years, she has had, about seventy-five
Doctors, each saying something different, and trying
different treatments, which seemed to make things worse all
of the time. The last Dr., that she had, put her in the
hospital for Tests and X-Rays, and the only thing that they
found out, was that she had, about seventy per cent more acid
in the stomach, than she should have.
Now Dr., this is her condition at present. She has no desire
to eat, and eats only soft baby foods and liquids, and just
before she eats, she gets a terrible nervous feeling in the
pit of her stomach, and the Eustachian tube leading to the
ears, closes up while she is eating, which seems to make her
become panicky while eating. When this happens, it causes
these awful nervous spells, now after the food gets down, it
will not stay, she immediately begins to belch, and the food
comes back up, in mouthsful, and she gets an awful burning in
the stomach, which, bothers her for several hours. Also, if
she moves around, you can hear a noise in the stomach, which
sound like a fluid. She also, gets attacks of lose bowels,
and other times she will suffer from constipation, also, in
the last five years she has lost about thirty pounds. Also
during the menstruation period, she becomes more nervous, now
some months the menstruation is very heavy, and others, it is
very poor. When she first got sick, the menstruation stopped
altogether for about six months. But, after taking a lot of
Theolin, it started again. Now, for the first two years of
her sickness she took 1 1/2 grs. of Phenobarbital, then she
took Bromides for one year, and now, for the last two years,
she has been taking the Phenobarbital again, she also takes
Belladonna drops, before her meals, and she has also taken, a
lot of Amphojel, and Alkazane, and now she just started to
take Creamo Carbonates, and is still taking Belladonna drops,
and the Phenobarbital, which she can't seen to stop.
Now Dr., she is not confined to the bed, but she does not
walk outside of the house, and does not do anything, she just
lays down, most of the time. She can't stand much company,
does not care to read or write, she claims, that these things
make her more nervous. She just seems to be depressed, at
all times, and when she awakens in the morning, she is like
some one who, has just had an awful fright, and is always,
afraid that the ears are going to close up. You see, she has
a ruptured eustachian tube in the ear, which causes the ear
to close, and she also has a case of sinus trouble.
You see, she has lost all faith in Doctors, the only one that
she had a little faith in, is now in the Army, and since he
left, she seems worse. The only place that she goes, is in
the car, and then only for about twenty minutes.
She has been examined, for female trouble and, they found
very little, in fact, not enough to worry about. Of all the
doctors, she has had only one said that she was changing
life, the rest all said no. She also is the Mother of a fine
son, who is nine years old, and is in the best of health.
Now Dr., a friend of mine spoke to me about you, so I am
asking, if you will help us, as I feel, and my wife feels,
that you can, and what ever the fee may be, just let me know.
She, is in an awful run down condition and has tried lots of
tonics, she cannot take anything with Alcohol or Iron.
She is a Catholic and never fails to burn her candles, but
she seems to have lost all hope of ever getting well again,
and sometimes says it seems useless to pray even any more.
Hoping, that I have explained everything clearly enough, and
hoping that I will hear from you real soon, saying that you
can, and will help her.
I remain [...]
P.S. Sir, I also forgot, to mention, that at times her
breath comes in quick gasps, then she will commence to gasp,
and she sometimes keeps this up for hours.
