2/12/44 F. M. Still, D.O., Superintendent of Still-Hildreth
Osteopathic Sanatorium in Macon, Missouri wrote EC: "Miss
[
3475], daughter of Mrs. [...], of ..., the patient you
so kindly referred to us, was admitted to the sanatorium
January 22.
"We are enclosing copy of our examinations. The condition
is a well established case of schizophrenia but since its
incipiency there has been a complete remission of symptoms on
one occasion, which would make the prognosis more favorable
than the average case of this duration, so we are hopeful
much can be done for Miss [
3475].
"I am enclosing our check for $25, as it is our custom to
return the examination fee to the referring doctor.
"Thanking you again for your interest."

Emotional status dissociation Judgment unreliable
Behavior posturizing detachment Hallucinations auditory
Sociability moody introspection Delusions vague persecutory
Remarks: The patient presents a profound dissociation
of faculties with consciousness in a measure clouded and
the attention centered mainly in morbid experiences of
hallucinatory character. She arouses herself partially to
respond to questions in a hesitating manner of puzzled doubt
and uncertainty. Facial grimaces, meaningless smiling,
posturizing, and motor tensions are observed. Acts without
apparent realistic purpose occur. She admits a sense of
mysterious control over her mind and behavior. Thoughts and
suggestions occur to her which appear to have their origin
in other peoples minds. She persistently hears talking the
source of which she is unable to definitely locate. The
content of this supposed talking is annoying, confusing, and
contradictory. She has the impression that some influence
outside herself moves her bodily members in peculiar and
unintended ways. Many parties to her unknown, may be
secretly exercising this strange control. Her efforts to
"fight off" these burdening influences subjects her to
persistent and fatiguing strain. She feels disagreeably
frustrated, puzzled, and unable to think things through.
Alert social and general interests are withdrawn and
dissociated phantasy and unreality mainly occupies the
content of consciousness. The problem represents a well
established schizophrenic type development.

11/17/44 Mother wrote for Ck. Physical appointment for
[
3475], repeating the background to date to refresh his
memory, then saying:
"We took her to Still-Hildreth Sanitarium, in Macon,
Missouri, where she has been ever since, and, while her
physical health has improved during her stay, there does
not appear to be much of an improvement in her mental
condition... What I would especially like to ask is:
"Are the adhesions in the cecal area, sigmoid, and hepatic
flexure the adhesions referred to in the reading, and, if
not, where are they located? What corrections should be made
in the pelvic organs by an osteopathic gynecologist, as the
gynecologists have been unable to locate anything to correct
in the organs in which they specialize? Would an operation
to remove the adhesions be beneficial, and, if so, what
adhesions should be removed? Is everything possible being
done for her recovery, and are there any further suggestions
that might be beneficial at this stage?
"I was very happy to hear of the improvement in your own
health, and the encouraging tone of your own personal reading
[
294-212 on
9/17/44]. I pray every day for your health and
success, and hope you will soon be fully recovered."
1/17/45 Mrs. Lydia J. Schrader Gray (acting for GD) answered
her letter with the sad news of Edgar Cayce's passing,
and returned the $25.00 on deposit for the Ck. Physical
appointment.
