1/29/44 Oral report by husband to ING: About twelve years
ago she became mentally unbalanced, to the extent of not
knowing anyone for nine months. She wouldn't eat, had to be
fed by a nasal tube. Feared everyone. One day just snapped
out of it... Then confined in a house with doctors and
nurses... 6 years later a female operation and had both
ovaries removed. Became anxious about having a child in
1935-6... 1938 they adopted a child, hoping it would help.
Her family think now that the husband's attentions to the
child have been the cause of her condition... Sept. 1938 she
became mentally ill. A psychiatrist gave her medicine of
doubtful help. Ill for a month... In 1939 another attack
for six weeks, kept at home again... 1940 another attack;
sent to Henry Ford Hospital without success. Then to private
sanitarium, for she became very violent. After 3 mos. she
snapped out of it... In '41 another attack; sent her again
to Ford hospital; shock treatments, ill 2 months... '42 ill
2 more months... 1943 - the bad one - ill in February, sent
her to Wauwatosa sanitarium in Wisconsin, been there ever
since... Reactions: will go for several weeks perfectly
normal, having a fine time with husband on his weekend
visits. Then at the end of perhaps the next week will
suddenly have a relapse and become very violent. Nobody
knows why. Before the attack she writes a great many
letters, and fights it hard... During the spell a chemical
discharge is apparent on her body, and from her mouth... She
has been given a total of 58 shock treatments. They are the
only means of quieting her. After them she is melancholy for
a few days, then fine for a few weeks... No osteopathic
treatments given... No recollection of injuries... Seems to
care for the son quite genuinely.
