9/13/43 EC's letter to mother: "Your letter of recent date
has been received. Thank you for your interest.
"May I take this opportunity to explain a little more about
my work and myself.
"For over forty years, I have been able to give two psychic
readings each day. While these readings are given, I am in
an unconscious state, which lasts from thirty minutes to an
hour and a half. These readings are recorded by a
stenographer and the copy of the information sent to you.
Thousands of people have told me that they have been
benefited through following these suggestions.
"The appointments for these readings are made in the exact
order as I receive them.
"During the past few months a book on my life and work has
been published (THERE IS A RIVER, by Thomas Sugrue, Henry
Holt and Co., N.Y.) and this has been followed by several
magazine articles. My mail has jumped to hundreds of
letters, telephone calls and telegrams each day.
"The Association, which is studying and presenting my work
is anxious that you acquaint yourself fully with the scope of
the information given in these readings. We have found
through many years of experience that the degree of help
obtained is in direct proportion to the understanding and
right attitude of those seeking help.
"Keep in touch with us. Secure some of the literature
suggested. Then if you feel that we may still be of help,
write us again. Sincerely yours,..." [This was a form
letter.]
9/22/43 Mother's letter to Ass'n: "Was our letter filed in
order that our little son may have a reading some time in the
future? Will you please write me as to what amount of money
I shall forward to you for Mr. Cayce's reading? (Since both
diseases the boy is suffering from are desperate and of
lengthy duration, we feel the reading, regardless of how far
into the future it may come, may help us to save our little
son that he may have a normal life.) Please send booklet on
Life of Mr. Cayce and any and all research papers on psychic
readings, I may have. Am sending for "There Is A River" and
'A Search For God'..."
3/44 Mother's letter verifying appointment with case history
and questions: "About 4 years or so ago [
3703] complained of
pains in knees. Twice was taken to family physician for
diagnosis. Dr. pronounced him well on both occasions. Jan.
16, 1943 took him to Child Specialist - Diagnosis - Rheumatic
Fever - had caused murmur in left ventricle. Prescription -
Bed Rest. I had him in bed 4 months at home. Then he felt
so much better I could no longer keep him quiet enough. The
Specialist then suggested Stanford Convalescent Home - where
there are 80 children. [
3703] has been there since August
16, 1943 in bed. I believe him to be rather happy there
since he has other youngsters around him. He will probably
be sent home August 16 when his year is up. (If he is well
enough to be up) Questions:
1. Is Oakland climate detrimental to [
3703]?
2. Shall I anticipate a normal life for him or a sedentary
life due to damaged heart muscles?
3. Can you please tell me if he has any particular talent,
to assist me in vocational guidance for him?
4. Believing him musical can you possibly assist me in the
choice of an instrument? Please forgive me if the last 2
questions seem irrelevant. They really connect with question
#2. If he is to be rather delicate I hope to help him in
every way to find a way of life that will mean happiness to
him. Please believe me I do not intend to be pessimistic
about his future. As to choosing a musical instrument, my
choice would be the piano. For one reason because he would
sit, but would it, do you suppose, be too strenuous? I wish
I had the command of words to express to you my gratitude.
May God bless you..."
REPORTS
7/21/44 Mother's letter to EC: "I write this because I am
desperate about [
3703]. He was sent home from Stanford
because he was NOT improving as he should! He is worse than
he was a year ago.
"The reading suggested Short Wave Treatments. In as much as
he is confined to his bed it is impossible for me to obtain
these treatments. For months I hoped for sufficient
improvement in him that he could be carried to where these
treatments are obtainable. He has been in bed a year and a
half. The least activity causes his temperature to rise.
In God's Name what shall I do?
"This is not an attempt to "chisel" any advice. I write
because I am frantic and since I can't follow the suggestions
of the reading, I realize another one would avail me nothing.
"I honestly don't know then why I am taking up your time
with this letter. I guess it's because I don't know what
else to do.
"Isn't there ANY way to destroy Strep in the blood stream
causing Rheumatic Fever, causing untold damage to the heart?
Yours in sincere confidence,..."
8/18/44 EC's letter to [
3703]'s mother: "Pardon me for not
replying to yours of the 21st of July much sooner, but I have
been ill, myself, for the last two or three weeks, and
haven't been able to get back to work yet.
"I appreciate your appeal to me, though I have not been able
and am not yet able - to reply in any way that may be of
help.
"I wish I knew just what to tell you to do. I am in hopes
that your husband is still holding on, and that we may yet be
the means of being of some service.
"Do let us hear from you, and I assure you that if it is at
all possible within the next few weeks to get in an
appointment to see what is best to do, we will be glad to
try..."
6/11/51 Report from mother of [
3703] in reply to
questionnaire:
"We did not feel the reading was a correct diagnosis at the
time, and still don't. However, our son has made a complete
recovery, Thank God. Best wishes..."
10/18/52 Comment by D. H. Fogel, M.D. (Heart specialist):
1. Rheumatic heart, disease active.
2. Strep.
