REPORT ON 2ND DOWSING FIELD TRIP (Sept. 9, 1973, Kelly's
Ford, Virginia)
On a sunny Sunday morning, over 40 dowsers ranging in age
from Wilburn Smith's 12-year-old daughter to senior citizen
William Moore, attorney and counsel to the Society for the
Application of Free Energy, met at the former Civil War
battlefield site on the Rappahannock River in Culpeper
county, Virginia. There was much enthusiasm in evidence
since the group has never come back "empty-handed" from prior
trips, and has always found at least one large metallic
object dating back to the Civil War period. We had high
hopes that we could continue this record and at least come
back with some portion of the treasure that we have long
sought.
At the site, group leader Carl Schleicher covered the
history, background and plans for the day's search to recover
the Civil War payroll treasure. Each attendee was given a
two- page write-up and commentary on the Edgar Cayce readings
which were extracted from the Cayce Foundation at Virginia
Beach describing the treasure and how it was buried by Union
troops on 24 September 1863 when overrun by the Confederate
army during the skirmish at Kelly's Ford. They hastily
buried the total Federal Army payroll, which consisted of
numerous gold and silver coins, to avoid letting it fall into
enemy hands. This has been an elusive treasure through the
years, and one reason may be that previous searchers failed
to carry out to the letter Edgar Cayce's explicit
instructions. The group brought a "silver dowsing rod" as
recommended by Cayce and several silver and gold witness
coins to assist in the search. Mr. Schleicher emphasized
that one of the keys to success in dowsing is to adequately
prepare oneself by programming the mind and mental thought so
that the dowsing rod, which serves as an amplifier of the
dowser's response to external stimuli, will only respond when
the items for which he is programmed are in his immediate
vicinity. He noted that this is the biocybernetic basis for
dowsing.
After a warm-up session at a site where the group
had previously found several cannon balls and other
silverware paraphernalia, the search Commenced. Having
hopped over the barbed wire fence, while keeping a wary eye
on the many bulls on farmer Luke Poland's property, they
continued the dowsing search where it had left off on the
last trip in May 1973. It will be recalled that in this
area the general group had found a most attractive large
carpenter's plane which appeared to be about a hundred years
old. Several of our dowsers, including Hannah Kelly and
Phyllis Roos, had strong feelings at that time that the
treasure would be found approximately 6 feet from a large
tree adjacent to the river and the barbed wire fence. This
tree had been previously marked and designated by them, and
Mr. Schleicher led a dowsing search in an area encompassing
an arc of ten feet from this tree.
Several metal detectors, that is non-dowser type devices,
were also used, and it was noted with amusement that all they
were detecting were bottle caps, pieces of tin foil and other
modern-day junk items.
The first hole was dug to a depth of 3 feet where several
dowsers had rather modest reactions; however, a check at the
3-foot level revealed no Civil War objects in the hole.
After a close scrutiny of why the reactions occurred, it
appeared that some iron-ore bearing rock may have been the
reason, since this would probably fit the mental programming
of "metallic objects from as far back as the Civil War
period". Metal detector devices confirmed the iron ore
content in these rocks.
The second hole was dug where there were very strong dowsing
reactions, particularly by the daughter of Wilburn Smith, who
incidentally had found one of our items of interest from the
Civil War period on the last trip. This reaction was
confirmed by other dowsers including Carl Schleicher, and a
prediction of 3 feet was made for the object sought. Jess
Bunch then dug a 4 foot diameter hole in soft clay soil. At
a depth of approximately 3 feet his shovel struck a very
large, beautiful flat iron that appeared to be at least 100
years old. The iron had the number "7" and a "keystone"
symbol on it. The number "7" has appeared on previous
cooking utensils found in this area and possibly indicates
that one of the military units engaged here may have had this
number in its organizational title. Finding this handsome
antique iron was a mind-expanding experience and certainly
proved to those who witnessed this amazing "find" what
dowsing can accomplish. A search was also made on the north
bank of the Rappahannock River at a place which Edgar Cayce
followers from the A.R.E. thought might contain the treasure.
This region, it was noted, had been thoroughly searched in
previous years by the Edgar Cayce Foundation (A.R.E.). Large
pock-mark holes were noted similar to small-size moon
craters. It was believed that these were left by the Cayce
group when dug there some years ago. Members of the Cayce
group indicated this area might still be haunted by spirits
of the soldiers who engaged in mortal combat here; however,
no one in the SAFE group confirmed this. No strong dowsing
reactions were noted in this area, so the main part of the
group then proceeded to the island in the center of the
river.
Led by Dave and Loretta Rhodes, these dowsers dug two very
large holes on this island where strong dowsing reactions
were indicated. These were confirmed by other dowsers and a
huge 8 foot hole was dug, but all that has been found so far
on the island area is a buried 2 year old flash light and a
golf ball. The island area does appear to be a logical
burial spot for the treasure, but unfortunately, time to
fully excavate the holes where strong dowser reactions had
been noted finally ran out. On our next trip we hope to
explore this island, which incidentally is within the old
Kelly's Ford bridge area and could therefore be a logical
hasty burial spot for a defending army undergoing heavy
attack. The main problem at this spot is that the river has
many times overflowed and deposited much Sandy silt on the
island. Thus, any treasure buried during the 1860's would
probably be at least 8 feet deep. This will not daunt our
dowsers, who hope to return to this area soon. At least we
have kept our record of never coming back empty handed, and
did indeed find at least one object for which we were
programmed - a credit to all who were there on this eventful
day.

Saturday, June 22, may mark a turning point for the turbulent
history surrounding the Civil War treasure at Kelly's Ford
Crossing on the Rappahannock River in Virginia.
Over two dozen dowsers and sensitives spent the day there
uncoverinq old artifacts (bayonet, spikes, pulley) and
investigating sites of a reputed treasure first brought to
light by psychic Edqar Cayce. Dr. Carl Schleicher introduced
the group to a brief history of the site and its
associations, and demonstrated a variety of dowsing rods and
pendulums for newcomers, who quickly set about to learn the
new skill. That night the group sighted emanations from two
sites resembling those Edgar Cayce predicted would come from
the treasure (Reading [
3812]).
But then other strange things began to happen. The area has
had a long history of negative events connected with those
seeking its reputed $30,000 gold and silver treasure.
DOWSING TRIP GETS "UNEXPECTED" RESULTS
Even with preparation beforehand to establish oneness of
purpose for the betterment of mankind, some members of the
party became agitated and upset by "vibrations" from the
area.
One young sensitive girl couldn't stand the sight of six men
(one with a gaping hole in his side) guarding the bridge
approach and left the area visibly disturbed. Another
psychic confirmed the phenomena, and also asked to call off
the venture.
Visible emanations were seen by most of the party at two
excavation sites. One in the river, opposite the island, had
a bluish mushroomed-shaped light hanging low over it, and
also presented some dowsing indications. The other site
under the bridge revealed itself as orange rays most
noticeable several feet above the ground level. This area
produced the strongest dowsing reactions but also the
strongest negative vibrations.
A healing circle was held late that night for one of the
dowsers, and secondarily, to bring positive energy to the
area, but it was felt that additional activities would be
needed to complete the task.
Also needed is further confirmation on the actual site
locations, as digging would require pumps and possible other
machinery, with some expense. The treasure is expected,
according to Cayce, to be more than six feet underground or
water, because of change in the river bed.
Both Eugene Condon, MRU associate, and Sally Seibert of
Columbus, Ohio, received spiritual guidance on their site
locations, but seek further confirming elaboration.
If anyone has information relevant to this matter, please
forward it to S.A.F.E. headquarters for appropriate action.
10/28/74 Research Supplement submitted to E.C.F. by George
Weiss:
"Returned to Culpepper County, Va. for the 2nd attempt to
locate missing treasure October, 1974. With my companion
Susan Lupito we had high hope. Since being at the
approximate location myself in June, 1974, we felt we would
have more knowledge of the area.
"Having checked the ideals, I felt that we were at least
on the right path. We were well prepared, with a metal
detector, but I didn't realize that the resistor in the metal
detector had worn down considerably in the past few months.
None the less it still picked up objects at 8" in depth.
"As the readings stated on the 3rd and 6th day of the new
moon seek same. On the 3rd day of the new moon at sunset we
started out, but that's when things started to happen. We
were driving to the area on a deserted, lonely road and saw a
young woman walking in the direction of the area. I stopped
to ask her for a ride and she accepted. It was near sunset
and time was approaching. Without realizing it we gave her a
ride to way past the area of Kelly Ford. Well, as things
turned out we were not set up to seek because we were not
totally organized. So we missed seeing anything that night.
So we waited for the 6th night Oct. 20, 1974.
"On the 19th the night before, I stumbled in the hotel
bathroom and severely sprained my knee and ankle placing me
on crutches. This still did not hamper operations. We went
out again and looked for the lights but were unable to see
any. We did, however, see something bright, but it was only
the brush in the field reflecting the moon light. The next
day we were driving to Kelly Ford and Susan lost control of
the car. We rammed the fence post and dislodged the muffler
from the car. At this time we decided that too many things
were going wrong so we abandoned operations. Hopefully to
return under better conditions.
"Many months before ever coming to Virginia Beach I had a
dream. I was walking in an open field and saw a large hole
with many silver coins, mostly quarters. In this hole water
was running in a small trinkle, with rocks and surrounded by
broken wooden planks. I looked around and saw 3 or 4 ghostly
apparitions standing nearby. I felt that these apparitions
owned the coins so I continued on. As I walked on I came to
a river and everything was a gold aura, even the trees.
"As I later discovered this area contained gold. In fact
Culpepper County was an old gold mining area. I dreamt this
without ever having been there before. I did however, take
about 30 lbs. of samples back to Philadelphia where I
received $35 for the contents I recovered.
"After this dream I found out about this treasure while
looking into the readings and this started my mind to wonder
if I really was in tune to the forces that were responsible
for the placing of the treasure. I certainly felt it was.
"I feel that the readings were quite correct in all that we
found. Rock that was placed in a sort of large campfire
area. The old bridge abutment just above the ford. And an
old broken wall just on the side of the hill that rose to the
old bridge abutment. If other searches are made perhaps the
treasure will someday be found with a lot of prayer and good
luck. George Weiss."
