VOLCANO WHICH KILLED 36,000 AGAIN BLASTS
Batavia, Java, July 10 - (AP) - The volcano Krakatoa, which
exploded in 1883, killing 36,000 persons, with a roar which
was heard for thousands of miles, began a series of eruptions
today.
The eruptions are occurring at two-minute intervals and lava
was spumed to a height of about 2,500 feet.
The coast watch maintained by the Netherlands government
doubled its arrangements for safety precautions and ordered
warnings to be sent out by tom-toms through the inland
regions should the eruptions, in its opinion, become
dangerous.
It was reported that the small Island of Anakrakatau has
disappeared.
Krakatoa today is only a small volcanic island in the Sunda
Strait. Geologists believe that in an early period it was
part of a large volcano in the center of the tract where
Sunda Strait now runs.
At some prehistoric time the big volcano is believed to have
exploded the present islands, included Krakatoa. Peaks
formed within the great crater ring.
On August 2, 1883, the whole northern and lower portion of
Krakatoa, rising 2,623 feet above the sea, blew away. It
was estimated that the column of stones, dust and ashes shot
up at least 17 miles into the sky.
At Batavia, 100 miles away, the day was turned into night by
the ashes and lamps had to be lit in the homes.
The blast created a world-wide atmospheric disturbance. The
atmospheric wave traveled outward from the volcano half way
around the world. The wave then was "reflected," returning
in its original direction. Some authorities estimated that
this world-wide oscillation of atmosphere occurred seven
times.
The actual sound of the explosion was heard as much as 3,000
miles away. The dust was carried over the United States to
the east and over Asia and Europe to the west.
The sea waves created by the explosion are known to have
reached Cape Horn, 7,818 miles away, and many authorities
believed that the water effects were felt even in the
English Channel, 11,040 miles away.

12/29/75 Letter from Daniel Ginder:
"I just got the January A.R.E. JOURNAL. The article on
sunspots reminded me of some interesting information I came
across while reading THE SOLAR SYSTEM AND BACK by Isaac
Asimov. (Discus Paperback published by Avon Books copyright
1970 Library of Congress Catalog Card No. 78-89121.)
"It ties in with Edgar Cayce's World Affairs Readings about
the end of the century - 1958 - 1998.
"In Chapter 8 called, 'The Planetary Eccentric' dealing with
the planet Pluto, Mr. Asimov states that because of the
eccentric orbit of Pluto, it actually passes within the
orbit of Neptune. To quote from pg. 122:
'At the present moment Pluto is moving towards its
prihelion,' (point closest to the sun in its orbit)...
'That point will be reached in 1989... In fact it will
be closer to the sun than Neptune will be through the
entire range of years from 1979 to 1998.'
"This period covers the entire period of time when Mr. Cayce
said the cataclysmic earth events would be most frequent and
intense. Also Halleys Comet comes back at about the middle
of this period.
"I'm not familiar with astrological influences. Perhaps one
of the members with interests in this direction would like to
follow up on this and let us know if anything is indicated."
