1/04/44 Cousin, Mrs. [...]'s letter: "This is in reply
to your letter regarding [
4072] whose reading you have
scheduled for April.
"When he was about 12 years old he had a spasm which our
family doctor at that time thought was from something he had
eaten. Since no other spasms occurred for the next 4 or 5
years we thought no more about it. However about 10 years
ago he suddenly fell over in what seemed to be a faint and
which we had difficulty in bringing him out of. This
occurred at frequent intervals thereafter, some seeming to be
more severe and prolonged than others. We immediately began
consulting various specialists with no success whatever.
At first they thought it might be epilepsy, however in view
of the fact that there has never been anybody in either
his father or mother's family that had it, they decided it
couldn't possibly be. He has been in hospitals at various
times and been x-rayed from head to foot only to find that
physically he is perfect. They tested him for allergies and
he has been on very strict diets at various times. All of
these things seemed to help temporarily but eventually the
spells of unconsciousness would recur. We then contacted
Mayo Brothers. However they said while they had heard of
cases of that sort they simply did not know what caused it
and therefore had no idea of how to treat it. We then heard
of a specialist who maintains a large sanitarium in Battle
Creek who had a great deal of success with various cases
of this kind. We have had [
4072] there on 2 occasions for
treatment but unfortunately they have had no lasting effect.
The one fact that puzzles all the doctors consulted is the
fact that his physical condition is absolutely perfect. The
only serious illnesses he has had were pneumonia twice and
a very bad strep throat infection once. This infection
occurred when he was quite young so we had thought perhaps
this trouble started then. However none of the doctors have
been able to connect it in any way so we are now up against a
blank wall as far as any further treatment is concerned.
"[
4072] is a very talented artist but as you can imagine this
ailment has kept him from accomplishing very much with his
work. It of course kept him from any participation in the
war and since all his friends are in the various armed forces
he finds it very hard indeed to be the only one left at home.
Sometime ago he became interested in Christian Science. I,
personally do not know enough about this religion to discuss
it. I do think however it has improved his mental state but
he of course is still very depressed at times. To sum up,
we simply do not know what causes these faints. Some doctors
say it's epilepsy, others say not. So far nobody seems to
agree and certainly nothing has helped.
"I hope this is the information you will need. If there is
anything further please let me know. I'll be glad to give
you any information I can.
"Thank you very much for your prompt and kind attention to my
letter."
