9/05/25 Mother [
4280]'s letter: "...We are indeed grateful
for your advice regarding [
4281]'a condition. We received
your reading and began the treatments as you advised on the
18th. She seems some better, her skin has cleared some, but
her temperature still hangs on. She has one and one-fifth
degree temperature today. Dr. Layne thinks that the extreme
hot weather helps to keep the temperature running. We let
her play a little every morning but keep her quiet in the
heat of the day. We have had the driest, hottest summer here
in forty years... Now I want you to go over [
4281]'s case
again and tell me if 'Lacto-Dextrin', an antitoxic food for
changing the intestinal flora, prepared by the Battle Creek
Food Company, and used by the Battle Creek Sanitarium, for
all forms of intestinal troubles, would be beneficial for
her? And should we give the medicine you prescribed longer?
She has taken up almost one bottle. Her tongue does not seem
to clear off like it should. Dr. Layne said to tell you to
see if you can find the cause for her temperature now. Is
it an inflammation in the small intestine, or inflammation in
the colon? Or is it caused by any of the glands in her body,
if so describe and tell him what to do to relieve it. We
have given the treatments, the gentle massage, using the
salt baths, the cocoa-butter, the olive oil. Have given
the enemas too, as directed. She is eating fruit juices
and buttermilk also a little vegetable soup. Not any breads
except a Graham cracker put out by the Battle Creek Food
Company. She is very fond of them. Please see if they are
too heavy for her, and describe just what kind of breads and
crackers she should eat. We have been unable to find any nut
flakes and corn flakes as you said she should have. Please
describe these, and see where they can be bought. She begs
for breakfast bacon. Please see if she can take any kind of
meats. Should she eat eggs? Raw and sweetened or coddled?
I am straining all her vegetable soup at present. See if
this is necessary? If she eats any vegetables like beans,
peas, thoroughly cooked, they pass in stools just like she
ate them. Should she have any tomatoes, either cracked or
uncooked? She begs so for them! Can she take light rolls
or whole wheat bread? Will she ever need butter again? That
is what made her sick, too much rich butter and cream. Some
doctors say I should not have her to leave off all butter,
but I have for the past eight weeks. Please see if she could
ever eat butter again. Does she need Liquid Petrolagum,
or oil in any form? Please describe. Does she need olive
oil? Can she have raw mellow pears, sweet ripe grape juice?
Please let us hear from you as soon as possible. P.S. Be
sure to see if tonsils are diseased!"
