5/10/26 Drs. Al. C. and Mary E. Layne's letter: "...The
reading on little [
4281] came in due time and we greatly
appreciate all your untiring efforts to help us. She seems
to be improving some now, though slowly. There are just a
few other questions that I want to get you to answer for us,
as soon as you possibly can. You say she has malaria yet. I
thought she must have, as her temperature hangs on in spite
of all we have done to stop it. Please see just where and
how she contracted the malaria. Did she get it through the
water or milk supply at ..., Georgia, or from the mosquitoes
or decaying vegetation? Would a change of climate benefit
her condition? If so, please tell where we should take her
for the summer. Would Prof. Weltmer's Hot Hand magnetic
treatment, of Nevada, Missouri, cure her? The baby
specialist in Atlanta advises giving her a malaria tonic
#138,473. What does this tonic contain and would it benefit
her? I have used Winter-Smith's Chill and Malaria Tonic with
grown people very successfully. Please see if this would
benefit [
4281]. [
4281] begs to eat beets, squash, fresh
ripe tomatoes, raw, and ripe strawberries, also blackberries,
string beans. Please see if she can eat the vegetables
well-cooked and mashed? The raw tomatoes or carrots? Also
strawberries? Can she eat ice-cream made of boiled milk and
eggs? Or sherbet or fruit juices? And which fruits? Should
she eat egg custard or chocolate custard in very small
quantities or at all? She still runs a temperature, so
please see if she should have any fresh butter or a little
boiled sweet milk on her cereals? She cannot eat them
without something, she says! She is taking the boiled B.B.
Culture buttermilk now. Would the B.B. Culture benefit her
for a tonic? Should she eat any corn-muffins or butter-cakes
made of scalded meal and cooked without grease? When can she
eat any sweet or Irish potatoes? Should she take lemon juice
with either salt or sugar? She craves lemonade! Or fresh
pineapple juice, sweetened? Should she go bare-footed at
all this summer? She is always asking to leave off her shoes
since the warm days have come! We want to know if she should
return to ..., Georgia, in a few weeks or remain in Griffin,
where she can get the treatments daily?
"Now, we ALL sincerely appreciate all your wonderful
helpfulness and Mr. [
4283] wants to send you an offering real
soon. He would have long ago, but had to let his store go
at a great sacrifice, because he could not stand the indoor
strain. Had to get an outdoor position! Please let us hear
from you at once, just as soon as you can..."
