This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 20th day of August, 1927, in accordance with request made by Dr. A. C. Layne.

TEXT

1. GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for the improvement of same.
2. EC: Yes, we have the body here. This we have had before, you see.
3. Now, we find there has been considerable change in the physical forces of this body since last we had same here. Some have been to the improvement of the body. Others have been to detriment of the body. While the physical forces showed great improvement until there arose those conditions wherein that bacilli was produced that caused again a form of streptococci in body - hence the source of the temperature that arises off and on in the physical forces of body - until then we find the physical conditions much improved.
4. Now we find only the necessity - while these are in abeyance - these germatic conditions that produce these forces in the body - that we only need to build that resistance in the system as would be necessary to overcome these conditions.
5. Then, the diet and the eliminations are to be looked after the closer, and followed in rather the strict nature - as HAS been done for greater part of time for the body, see?
6. The manipulations are well, and these should be continued to be given, especially so manipulate those ganglions that govern the activity of liver and of kidneys, that the stimulation from diet - or from activities of that produced in the blood supply - will not overtax either of these poles in the system, see? for we find there is the inclination for these to show the response to the system in its attempting to adjust itself.
7. For the cough and irritation as is produced through the bronchials, lungs, throat and nasal cavities, we would take occasionally - once, twice, three times each week, if necessary - two to five (2 to 5) drops of coal oil on sugar, using as an inhalant - to overcome the conditions in the mucus coating of bronchials, nasal cavity and lungs, these properties:
8. To four (4) ounces of pure grain alcohol, add:

   Eucalyptol......................20 minims,
Rectified Oil of Turp............3 minims,
Balsam of Fir....................5 minims,
Creosote,Rectified...............3 minims,
Tincture of Tolu, in solution...30 minims.

9. Keep this in a glass container at least three times the size of the quantity, or in a ten to twelve ounce bottle with glass stopper, see?
10. Shake solution before this is inhaled through nostrils and through the mouth. INHALE this whenever there is the coughing - from those conditions as have been produced - so that this will act as the CLEANSER, or the sterilizer of the system where inflammation may be produced by irritation in the mucus lining of the respiratory system, see?
11. For diet: Follow very much that as has been given for the body. The beef juice may be given, so long as it will be assimilated by the system. Very few apples of any save that of the character as has been given, unless same are cooked. No bananas. Oranges and grapefruit - citrous fruit - may be given in season in small quantities. The buttermilk, or that of the character as has been used may be given, as has been OUTLINED for same. Cream and BEET sugar - not cane sugar - may be given on cereal. Any cereal good. We would prefer - for THIS body - that as is found in grapenuts, for this will produce the better action from the saliva glands, which is necessary for digestion - especially with this body. Any of the vegetables that grow ABOVE the ground may be prepared in small quantities for the body. The bread should never be of the white bread, but any of the brown breads, or any of the Graham breads. Little sugar - LITTLE sugar - other than BEET sugar may be given this body. Not too much of the action of meats, though broths of birds or while [wild?]game may be given the body, and THESE will be effective.
12. Keep those conditions in the system wherein ELIMINATIONS are properly taken care of. The system is overcoming, by the creation of those properties necessary to overcome the germ as produces irritation to all MUCUS producing portions of throat and bronchials. The clarification through the inhalant will prove effective. In the nature of eliminants, use that of Fletcher's Castoria, and enemas may be used when the system is showing temperature - enemas of tepid or cool water.

BACKGROUND

1. 7/26/27 Drs. Mary E. and Al. C. Layne's letter: "...Be sure and answer the following questions for us in regard to [4281]. She developed a severe cough six weeks ago and had high temperature, and still has some temperature. Please see if she had whooping cough, as she had been exposed to it. Please see what causes this temperature. Please examine her kidneys and tonsils and duodenum, and liver, and spleen, and bowels. Tell what causes a continued discharge from her nose. Please have your director answer these questions. See if there is any special treatment for her. Should she be in school or does it tax her nerves too much to study?..."
2. 8/01/27 Drs. Mary E. and Al. C. Layne's letter: "...[4281] has been critically ill for a week now; had a relapse from the whooping cough, with such a high temperature and coughing and choking all the time at night. Please see what causes her to have such high temperature. What is best treatment for the labored breathing at night? She can't sleep well for this. What caused her to have relapse? Describe condition of her lungs, tonsils, stomach, bowels, liver, colon, kidneys and duodenum. What is the best treatment for her at this time, magnetic hand, or osteopathic, or both? Should she eat tomatoes, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, squash and carrots, beans, peas, spinach, lettuce, celery? If there are any vegetables she should not eat please name them. Tomatoes are said to be bad for her kidneys, yet she begs for them. Please see if she should have milk twice daily? Should she take raw goat's milk or boiled buttermilk? Name cereals and bread she should eat now. We are so anxious to build her up again, to keep from any bad after effects of whooping cough. She has been sick six weeks with it now. Should she take B. B. Culture or Acidophilous form of culture? Has been taking the Acidophilous for a year. Should she eat any fruit or milk between meals? Have been advised against her eating between meals, yet she gets so hungry at times between meals.
   "Should she go to public school or private school? Does study tax her too much yet? I mean, will it this fall? Should she take music? How long will we have to be careful of her because of the whooping cough? She has had a serious attack. Please send her reading as soon as possible.
   "I trust that the Cayce Hospital will be a success. You should have had one a long time ago.
   "What are the obligations to become a member of the Association? Please write fully about it.
   "Please answer these questions regarding [4281] as soon as possible. We need your help!..."
3. 8/16/27 Mother [4280]'s letter: "...She [4281] has had whooping - cough for nine weeks, and still coughs very badly, since having a relapse... See how long it will be before she is normal again. What causes her temperature? What causes her nose to bleed so often?... We had her in two sanitariums last year. One in Missouri benefited her quite a bit with magnetic hand treatment.
   "Mr. Cayce, I want you to please give readings when we want and need them. Mr. [4283] can pay you before long now... Have had a very hard time. He lost so much money and we have had so much sickness. I hate it because I can't send you any money now, but hope to soon..."

REPORTS

1. 8/20/27 EC's letter enclosing the reading 4281-15: "...I'm sure you feel I owe you an apology for not having send [sent] you this reading long before this. It hasn't been my desire to be negligent in the matter, but since returning from our trip this summer we have been so very busy, trying to fulfil all of the appointments we had that had piled up on us - and that have come in since then - and also getting the matter straightened regarding the details of the Association, as well as the actual details about beginning the direction of the Institution - that I have scarcely known whether I was going or coming. I trust, however, that the delay has not been detrimental, and that the little lady [4281] will get along the nicest kind. Possibly some definite changes are made in suggestions for treatment. I'm in hopes these will prove most effective.
   "We are now getting started with the work of the Association, and I'm very much in hopes that we may count you and Mr. [4283] - as well as Dr. and Mrs. Layne - as members of the Association. I am in hopes that the good that has been obtained from the use of the work will justify you all in following very closely the developments of the Institution, in all of its phases. I would certainly like to see Dr. Layne and Mr. [4283], and talk over with them regarding the plans and the actual running plans of the Institution - and I'm in hopes you will all make it a point to come and see us at the very first opportunity.
   "I trust you will let us hear from you from time to time, and with kindest personal regards to all, I am..."
2. 9/17/27 Mother [4280]'s letter: "...Your good letter and the reading of [4281] came in due time and I want to tell you how much we appreciate your kindness. I hope we can send you an offering soon, now, as we are going to sell the land at ... in lots. Then we can send you some money. I hate it because we haven't been in a position to send you this sooner, but we simply couldn't!
   "We want you to go over [4281]'s case again, just as soon as you possibly can; as she is not improving as we want her to. Her cough is distressing, and she began 'whooping' the 7th of June. She coughs so at night that she can't sleep well, and we are all alarmed over her physical condition.
   "Now, please see what she needs to stop the cough, and to build up her blood, and gain weight. She is very anemic. How much below normal is her blood? Is her whole condition below par? Dr. Layne wants to know if magnetic treatment will cure her; also if the 'electric magnetism' would do her any good. There is an electrical belt given for this treatment. Should [4281] try to study one hour each day? She is nearly nine years old and we couldn't send her to school any the last two years. We want her to begin to read and write. She wants to take music and I want her to, if she is physically able. Please see if she can study one hour per day and take music.
   "Should she eat any butter at all? She has a ring-worm in one knee. Dr. Layne thinks she should not eat any butter. Please see what will cure this ring-worm. Will B. B. Culture benefit her? Is there any 'hookworms' in and around ..., Georgia? She wants to go 'barefoot', but the doctors say there is hookworm in the sand. Is there? Please let me have this reading just as soon as you can..."
3. 9/23/27 EC gave the 16th reading - 4281-16.
