2/15/45 GD's letter [dictated long distance by Harmon
Bro.]:
To THOSE HAVING READING APPOINTMENTS CANCELLED:
This letter is a sad one. As you probably know, Edgar Cayce
passed from this life on January 3, 1945, after an illness
of several months. His death brought to an end the kind of
wonderful service he was able to give others - those psychic
readings with which he has helped thousands, since the first
one in Hopkinsville, Ky., back in 1901. Your appointment,
which was to have been on a certain date during the coming
months, cannot now be kept, of course.
We of the staff of the Association, who have worked with Mr.
Cayce for so many years, know how deeply this will disappoint
you. We know how much you had looked forward to your
reading. We were also looking forward to helping you.
Now we want to straighten our account with you. When you
applied for Association Membership you promptly sent us your
contribution which was to be applied to the particular phase
of research involved in obtaining and transcribing your
reading. We want to be just as prompt about sending it back.
If you will just check the enclosed slip and return to us, we
will mail you a check at once. Be sure we have your correct
address.
You might look over the enclosed publication list. If there
are any of our books or pamphlets that you want now, check
them off of the slip you are returning and we will deduct
that amount from the check we are to send you.
There is one more thing about your money. It did not secure
the reading that you wanted. But it might STILL do a lot
of good. You see, Mr. Cayce left behind him about 30,000
detailed readings which are filed in our vault here
along with case histories. Information in these files is
priceless. It covers all kinds of diseases; it deals with
vocational guidance; it offers facts on historical periods
- the range of this information is as wide as human problems
are wide. But because we have all been so eager to get more
and more readings from Mr. Cayce, we have hardly touched
this information. It has not been indexed yet. Now it has
suddenly become our only resource, and everyone seems to want
to turn to it.
That is the basic task of the Association: to extract,
organize and publish the material in these files. We must
begin at once with the data on some of these "incurable"
diseases. And we must continue working with material in all
the areas covered by the readings, until they are carefully
compiled and published. It is a long, slow job to summarize
the work of a lifetime like Mr. Cayce's. You may wish to
help.
People are writing, wiring, calling, and even coming in
person, to tell us here in Virginia Beach that they DO want
to help. One woman in Illinois said it very simply: "Keep
the money I have sent. I want it to help carry on this work.
God bless you." It may be that you feel the same way. if
you do - and we have been happily surprised so many times
this past month! Please check that part of the enclosed
blank suggested you retain your Associate Membership and
you will be contributing in a real way to the Association's
pioneer study of psychic individual's phenomena.
It goes without saying that the trustees and the staff of
the Association will be grateful for such a memorial to Mr.
Cayce's work.
And whatever you decide to do, we want you to keep in touch
with us. You may want to even subscribe to the BULLETIN,
as it reports on the progress of research into files of the
readings, presents articles, stories of personal psychic
experiences, book reviews, and keeps you posted on
publications and meetings of the Association. You may want
to subscribe to that unusual little digest called WEEKLY
READINGS EXTRACTS, one set of the most interesting extracts
out of each week's research. As your interest in the
Association grows, you may some day wish to become an Active
Member with added responsibility and participation which this
kind of sustaining membership involves.
Send us back the enclosed sheet marked with your
instructions.
Let me say again that we share your disappointment in
not receiving your reading. We know you are sharing
our personal sorrow.
Sincerely, [signed] Dorothy Gladys Davis, Secretary,
ASSOCIATION FOR RESEARCH AND ENLIGHTENMENT, INCORPORATED.

2/27/45 She replied: "I was deeply shocked to learn of
Mr. Cayce's untimely passing and feel the world has lost a
great friend as well as a learned man.
"It was my great privilege to have the benefit of one of his
readings and am only sorry I can not have the Life Reading
that would have meant so much in planning the rest of my
time here but it evidently was not to be...
"Wishing you every success in continuing this work,"
Very sincerely, [
