7/01/28 Letter from [
2901] to EC: "...As a member of your
Association I am turning to you for advice and assistance in
a matter while not mine personally is that of one very near
and dear who has called upon me for advice.
"...'s Inc. of N.C. is a retail clothing, hats and furnishing
store incorporated under the laws of that state.
"[
4570], my first cousin, is sole owner. The business has
not prospered and now seems hopeless if it remains in ...
[...] is a very charitable, honest and hard working man.
"Recently the above made contact with the Hart Schaffner &
Marx Company who wish to establish an outlet for their
merchandise in ..., N.C. Plans have progressed to the point
where this very big firm is willing to back ...'s Inc. with a
liberal line of credit and lend every assistance but they so
far have refused to take stock. This firm insists that the
new store have $15,000. in cash or its equivalent besides the
furniture and fixtures. Some part of this money can be
secured by disposing of merchandise at present on hand. It
has been up to now impossible to secure the additional cash
necessary and securing the only desirable site as well as
disposing of present merchandise on hand and getting the new
store ready for the coming season demands immediate action.
"In view of the above will you do me the favor of answering
the following questions which will allow me to help a most
worthy man and greatly relieve my anxiety over his plight.
1. From whom can the necessary additional funds be secured
and what should be done to secure same?
2. Will the present plans to tie up with Hart Schaffner and
Marx materialize and prove to be satisfactory and profitable?
3. Is there any better way for [
4570] to earn a happy
livlihood and be able to pay his creditors?
4. How can it be arranged to give up the present lease?...
"...If you will do me the very great favor of a reading this
week? I will be most grateful. There is no time to lose as
the situation is acute..."
