3/13/31 Wife [
1919]'s letter: "...Well, here we are far away
from home [six week trip to California]. My husband, Mr.
[
4661] feels so poorly. I called in a doctor and he called
it nervous exhaustion, but what to do to help him, that is
the question. He does not sleep well and in the morning,
after breakfast, has to lie down again but really does not
feel bright until he has had his nap after lunch. Then he
seems quite different. I believe he is losing weight.
"Of course he has been this way since his breakdown, taken a
bad turn again and is much worse. He cannot meet people
without it wearing him out, and is so discouraged because, as
he says, it worries me very much.
"I am feeling much better. The quiet here has benefited me.
"I often wonder if I should give up this delightful trip,
where there is so much glorious nature to see with him and go
back home with him. I feel we won't come back again but
then, I believe it would not be right to worry him. What do
you advise?
"He feels there is no help any more. We celebrated our
silver wedding here and I was so bright. It was depressing
to see I could not cheer him up, because we are such a happy
couple otherwise..."
3/19/31 EC's letter to [
1919]: "I have yours of the 13th,
and I am indeed sorry that Mr. [
4661] has not responded to
his surroundings as you would have desired. It is possible
that you have not had the time as yet, or it may be that you
were so situated that you could not carry out the suggestions
offered for his improvement.
"Should you decide to come back home, would it be possible or
convenient for you to come by Virginia Beach and spend a few
weeks here? The quiet and rest here would no doubt be well
for him, and we might be able to carry out the suggestions
outlined in the reading for his improvement - or we could
have further suggestions along this line that might prove of
a great deal of help and benefit to him. If he feels equal
to the trip and the change, this might be advisable.
"I assure you that it is our desire to be of help in any way
possible. I appreciate your writing me, and only hope and
trust that we may be of help in some way or manner."
