6/28/44 Mother's letter: "We would like to have an
appointment for his Life Reading. He feels that tho he finds
it so difficult to use his hands, a very different interest
in some line for which he is adapted would help him
immeasurably in forgetting himself. We have taken
'locomotories' in his 1st reading to mean using his hands in
every possible way. He has tried to do this: planting and
howing the garden, mowing the lawn, and doing a few things
about the house, but he is still so conscious about his hands
that he usually gets a disturbing nervous reaction. As Unity
has suggested, I continue to pray for his recovery almost
constantly. It seems to me God is answering. His nervous
reaction seems less severe and of shorter duration. At times
he says he doesn't think it will be long before he'll be able
to go to work. This is a most encouraging sign to me. He
was dreadfully disturbed over the words 'sad and serious'
in his 1st reading. I do trust there will be no need of
them reappearing in this one, for I feel that will not be
necessary. I do trust the reading will contain sufficient
encouragement to make life seem worthwhile to him. In 'There
Is A River' there was encouragement for saving the hair.
He is much worried and upset because his hair seems to be
thinning at the temples. Is he really losing his hair?
"He is taking much greater interest in people and life
generally. He is much more helpful. He seems to want to do
more for others than the consciousness of his hands permit.
He has been getting about socially at parties and picnics
with his own age-group, and is getting to where he enjoys and
forgets himself somewhat. There seems to be a gradual growth
in his faith. Lately he is taking quite an interest in the
bible. His greatest difficulty is belief in 'things not
seen'. He is very keen and has a discerning mind, and he
seeks proof for everything. The friends of Unity have been
unusually kind. Unity seems gradually to be taking hold of
him."
Mother's questions submitted in addition to the one at end
of 5042-2: "(1) What was meant in my 1st reading by 'use
of locomotories for body reflexes in the brain'? (2) Does
this mean that I should consciously use my hands as much
as possible? (3) What is the spiritual purpose for my
affliction? (4) What lesson am I to gain from it? (5) What
will keep me from losing my hair? (6) What suggestions are
there for a deeper spiritual understanding? (7) How can
I do more things for others and be more active in my own
age-group? (8) How can I acquire faith in things, the proof
for which I cannot find? (9) How can I learn to forget
myself? (10) Should I attempt to work; if so, what type
of work?"
REPORTS
8/24/44 Mother's letter: "In my son's last reading a
hypnotist was suggested if he seemed unable to do anything
for himself. He has tried very hard to help himself
with practically no results. Also we have searched for a
hypnotist without avail. He is so anxious to get well and to
do whatever is suggested that he has asked that I write you
to inquire the address of a hypnotist, or give information
as to how he might reach one. Right now he is camping in the
wilds of northern Michigan. He is swimming, rowing, chopping
wood, clearing land and picking berries. We are in hopes
that all these outdoor activities will help him some. He is
very anxious to continue his education and would like a life
reading soon in hopes that he may be directed to that for
which he is best fitted... He would like to get into college
this fall if he can straighten out sufficiently to settle
down to study. The Government is offering college training
to honorably discharged soldiers, but they are still refusing
to give him a pension. Even tho, as yet, his improvement
seems slight, waiting for whatever assistance you may give
has seemed to help him to hang on. We're hoping that, as
long as nothing else has cured him, hypnotism will solve
the problem."
8/29/44 EC's reply: "...I am not acquainted with a
hypnotist in your vicinity, but would advise that you write
to Dr. Thomas Garrett, ..., N.Y. who is a very good friend.
No doubt he will refer you to a hypnotist in your locality.
I do hope that he will be able to help you."
