2/25/44 Mrs. [
5045]'s friend's letter: "Forgive me - a
stranger - taking advantage of your busy time, but I'm all
mixed up inside, and I want to put it to your judgement...
Through the courtesy of Mrs. [
5045]'s daughter, who has
arranged this reading, I had the chance to study your
literature, and I have a complete faith and great admiration
for your work. I'm conscious that in writing this letter to
you, I'm doing something - maybe - I shouldn't do, but Mrs.
[
5045] is a very close and very dear friend of mine, and I
want her to derive the most beneficial help from your
reading. I think it's only fair that in order to give a good
reading you should know the real facts and status about Mrs.
[
5045]'s condition.
They are: About a few months ago (July or August), Mrs.
[
5045] fell down and injured badly her right breast... It
became hard, swollen and very painful. Examination of the
x-ray plates taken at the ... Hospital in ..., N.Y., showed a
case of malignant cancerous growth - (tumor). Radium
treatment under the direction of Dr. C. R. A. [Crandall (?),
M.D.] (same hospital) followed with quite satisfactory
results. Dr. C. R. A. has permitted Mrs. [
5045] to go to
..., Ill. with the understanding that she will contact a
doctor E. L. S. [Elsner (?), M.D.], at ... Hospital, and
follow up the treatments. The pains have now returned with
increasing severity. Mrs. [
5045] tries to hide it, but it's
plainly visible that she suffers terribly, yet she refuses to
go to the hospital or see a doctor. She just don't want to
live. She rather is waiting for the end. Nobody as yet
seems to realize it, but I have watched her carefully the
last few weeks, and have decided that she is going to take
her destiny in her own hands and will try to make her own
exit from life. I know it's a terrible thing to say, but I'm
nearly sure of it..."
3/03/44 Mrs. [6021]'s daughter's letter: "...Mrs. [
5045]'
daughter and I have been talking about you to many people.
I have loaned 'There Is A River' to 2 people, and they were
greatly impressed..."
3/28/44 Mrs. [
5045]'s daughter's letter: "I've been
unusually busy the past few weeks, and this is the first
chance to answer your last letter. There's no need to say we
were all terribly disappointed in the cancellation of
mother's reading. I would appreciate it if another time
(as soon as can be arranged) be set for her. I'm quite
anxious about her health and have all the faith that you can
help her. I must mention that since reading 'There Is A
River' I've interested a half dozen people in your work...
Hoping you are feeling well again."
4/23/44 Daughter of [
5045], wrote this letter: "Mother will
be home in New York at the time of the reading. The address
is ..., N.Y. If I am wrong about the time set for this
reading, please let me know."
