The patient presents a cloudy detachment and dissociation of
faculties with the attention strongly centered in
unproductive phantasy and unreality. The manner is dominated
by various purposeless mannerisms, posturizing, grimaces and
meaningless laughter. He mentions feeling "in a daze" but
otherwise denies discomfort. The dazed feeling, he believes,
may have resulted from metrazol given at Hartford Retreat
several years ago. He is obsessed with numerous puzzling and
contradictory impressions. Stating that he has been recently
in Davenport, Iowa, and came to Macon, Missouri, he at the
same time has the impression that he may be in France and
might be mistaken for a Frenchman. Asked if he has been
reading the news, he insists that he has, but he if found to
be without reliable information. He names General Pershing
as commanding the armies and suggests that he may have read
the classified ads and skipped the war news. He tells of
hearing a Mr. Brakebill repeatedly telling him what to do.
This party is said to live in Knoxville, but he is also
thought to be here. His voice is thought to be heard coming
from various parts of the building. He smilingly makes the
statement that his conscience troubles him and that he feels
quite guilty about his relations with God and the civil law.
Impressions occur that he has made others suffer, that he has
in some way, broken the law, that someone has been killed,
and that he, perhaps should be punished. He believes that he
may have had a court trial, but he does not know where or
when. He repeatedly laughs during conversation, registering
no emotions corresponding to his statements. General
behavior is aimlessly detached and without purposeful
motives. The problem represents tentatively a well
established schizophrenic development. [GD's note: Could
[
5167]'s hallucinations refer to a past incarnation from
which he is reaping karma?]

9/18/44 Mother's letter: "...I feel that the venture to
Still-Hildreth Sanatorium was not made in vain, even though
we cannot see the results just now."
10/19/49 Mother's reply to questionnaire: "...My son, at the
time of the reading, was being cared for at the Chiropractic
Sanatorium at ... I did have him taken to Still-Hildreth
Osteopathic Sanatorium, in Macon, Missouri, as recommended by
Mr. Cayce's reading. Both institutions cooperated in a
beautiful manner. I sent a copy of the reading to Dr. F. M.
Still, Superintendent of Still-Hildreth Sanatorium, and since
my son had had 2 accidents that might have caused brain
injuries, and the reading seemed to point to such causes of
his condition, I stressed and double-stressed the X-raying of
his brain, and if that showed nothing, to use other means as
recorded in the reading, namely fluoroscope, infra-red X-ray
or shadowgraph. They examined him thoroughly in every way
and gave their treatments which lasted perhaps several weeks.
It was too expensive for me to allow him to stay with them
longer, so he was returned to Davenport, apparently no better
than before. Though he has been ill for about 12 years now,
I do not give up hope, and continually pray for his recovery.
They are good to him at Forest Park, and apparently he is as
contented there as he would be anywhere. Physician's
Diagnosis and Treatment: Schizophrenia; shock treatment,
insulin and mitzrazol [metrazol], when first entering
hospital in 1938. No particular treatment since, except as
they give it at Forest Park, also that he received while in
Macon, Mo. Five shock treatments. My son is about the same
all the time, except he seems to be relieved more from
asthmatic spells. Used to have them often. Vitamin capsules
are apparently helping his physical condition."
