5/18/44 Daughter's letter: "I am writing you in regard to my
mother who is an invalid. She has been sick nearly 10 years,
and getting weaker all the time. At present, she cannot feed
herself or turn in bed, or walk, and can speak only in a
whisper, which is very hard to understand. Mrs. S. T. O., a
good friend of ours, called me 2 weeks ago, and asked me to
read 'There Is A River', with my mother in mind. Your sister
[
635] was kind enough to loan me her copy... I enjoyed it so
much and wrote mother about it, and she telephoned me to
write you right away... The doctors have given her up, and
say there isn't anything that can be done for her, but I am
sure Dr. W. E. S. in ... would cooperate with us if the
reading gives anything a doctor would have to do..."
5/29/44 [
5194]'s card: "In a recent letter to my daughter,
you said I may ask some questions: (1) Do you think the new
drug penicillin will be beneficial in my case? (2) If we
perfect a cure, will the trouble return? (3) Why does my
flesh burn so?"
