12/16/43 Letter: "First of all I wish to say that I have a
copy of the book THERE IS A RIVER, which, however, I have not
yet read; but I know from a review of it in the June 2nd 'The
Christian Century' something of its character, and it was
that review which induced me to secure the book. I have not
been able to read the book as yet, for the reason that a very
great portion of my time is consumed in merely keeping alive.
I venture to intrude upon your time and notice because of
this. Mine is the extraordinary case of being the victim of
a degenerate who projects his thought into women for all his
intimate pleasures. For many years I was picking up this
vibration without comprehending it, and without the slightest
idea of what was making my life such a burden: insomnia,
complete insomnia being one of conditions, a terrible
regularly recurring headache, etc. Later I met the man, a
distinguished musician, and I was in even greater distress
after that. He kept himself in person before my notice,
although I never spent any time in his company, and finally
after several years, being unable to get anything of value
to him out of me, he collapsed. That was 6 years ago, and he
has done nothing since except endeavor to extinguish my life.
I have learned how to channel out of me to considerable
extent the electric current that is formed in me, and so
the results are confined to extreme suffering and some
deterioration as of the teeth, etc. (Running a typewriter
is extremely distressing to him, and many times I am all
but entirely prevented from doing so.) If you could help
me to free myself of this, I would be glad to meet your
requirements as to compensation. Incidentally, I am deeply
religious, adding profound metaphysics to a very good
orthodox understanding, and have had thousands of Christian
Science treatments. They however, for reasons of their own,
do not treat the man; and of course, he goes on, gaily on."
12/27/43 Letter: "I have your kind and generous letter dated
the 21st, and hope springs in my heart. But I have never
doubted that a solution would be found, somewhere, somehow.
How I have been patient! I cannot understand how I have been
able to bear up except that I never doubted. As my letter
to you revealed, I have found ways to help myself; using
a vibrator on my head and neck, my system got started
discharging through my ears, like a stream from a fire
hydrant; of course, it worked gradually through my skin
all the time, but this alone was so little and slow. Going
through every nerve it is destroying my beautiful teeth. As
also indicated in my letter, I found that counter-vibration
was very helpful, and I spent as much time as I could on
street cars, absorbing the vibrations and beating him back.
The data pertaining to the work which you mentioned has not
been received. I will gladly become a member. After so much
time and unspeakable suffering - all in complete innocence -
may the end be near, very near."
1/10/44 Letter: "...My condition is such that I could not
bear to be kept in long suspense, especially when I make
the sacrifice that is necessary to put up the money, which
however is only right. Since you are psychic, you will
know that I speak the truth. In this connection, I am again
having Christian Science help: it is terrible again, this
persecution. The forms supplied do not exactly meet my
case, which is not physical, nor mental, nor spiritual,
but something which is aimed at destroying my physical and
mental. In fact, were I not able to drain off through my
ears and skin and even through the top of my head some of
this electric voltage that is engendered in me, at the rate
that it is now present, I would in 2 or 3 days become as
stiff as a board and utterly paralyzed, and death would not
be far off. The ordinary problem would be to stop that man,
whose name is C. A. M., conductor of symphony orchestra,
but 6 years ago deprived of orchestra and now just rotting
where he lies. The Christian Scientists have insisted on
concerning themselves only with the effects (me) and ignoring
the cause (him), so nothing is accomplished except to help
me bear it. However, there may be something which will
sufficiently neutralize the intrusion so that it will be
rendered harmless. You can understand that I am desperate.
I fill out the form and enclose it... Meantime, kindly, if
humanly possible, arrange a very early reading..."
1/15/44 Letter: "There has been a slight decrease in the
intrusion the last day or so, and at once I feel that soon
all will be well. You see I cannot doubt. I have no fear,
and seem to have unlimited patience. But all will be well,
and I want it to be soon. I have too much patience. The
cashier's check is enclosed. Oh, to be a person, a real
person, free to use my strong, clear mind and to earn money
now when there is so much of it being paid out, and to enjoy
life a little."
1/28/44 "I hasten to accept the period assigned
6/09/44. It
is a long time hence, but I can realize that the demands upon
you have become overwhelming. I hope that you may see your
way clear, in the event that some unexpected earlier opening
should appear, to move me up into it. However, I have
managed this long in ignorance and confusion and I should be
able with this hope before me to make the remainder of the
grade. That can't kill a good man, much less a good woman,
and I have a wonderful constitution and a strong well
balanced body. I resolutely look forward to active, gracious
living for some years to come. This vile monster has made my
existence a veritable hell for a couple of decades; but I was
born for more than that. As to the type of reading, I accept
your suggestion that it be physical; and as to the questions
to be asked, I shall spend some time on this and hope to
submit the best possible, also with a view to scientific
value. In this connection it is likely that I could supply
you, if you should so desire to complete your record,
some interesting and useful data. Many victims may find
themselves in the same situation that I was: almost complete
insomnia, a certain type of frequently recurring headache,
etc. without the slightest idea of the cause. I did not
until recently realize the true significance all around,
- that is, the results. I would be glad to assist in
any possible way. I have the notion that what with these
concentration camps, etc. and other conditions arising from
the War, this particular affliction will be greatly on the
increase."
2/10/44 Questions submitted in addition to those at end of
5221-1: "(1) What is, exactly, my condition? (2) What can
be done to free me from this intrusion? (3) About 3 years
ago, possibly before, a knocking developed in my room, not
always in the same place, what is the explanation? Very
little knocking at the present time. (4) When resisting the
intrusion, it sometimes rushed out a window like a spirit,
rattling and shaking violently the window. (5) Will I be
subject to further intrusions of the kind, and if so, how
can I protect myself?"
4/18/44 Letter: "...I use the vibrator on my head, all
around, and on my hands. It was through the use of this
instrument that I discovered I could drain out through my
ears the electric current or whatever it is that saturates my
whole being. My body eagerly seized upon this draining and
now the nerves to a certain extent empty themselves. I will
be awakened often, if asleep, with the stuff tearing out of
my ears. But much more is necessary to keep even moderately
clear. Rolling my head, as I have described, is a wonderful
clearance, and the quick back and forth which upsets all his
placements must be distressing to the old boy. I am up and
4 and 5 times a night from 12 o'clock (when I usually try to
get started to have some rest) until 7, and get 2 to 4 hours
sleep. Sometimes when I come in from the office or other
places, I throw myself on my couch and just let it rush out
of my ears - from the right especially it will do that; when
I revolve my head it seems to be mostly from the other ear.
Sometimes I apply heat to my back and raise very large
blisters which drain. I raise my hands above my head when
in a small room (where I will get a loud report), or at home,
and clap them once hard and jerk my arms down. That helps;
when I may not clap, I jerk; and I do one or two other
exercises. I drink gallons of water. Running a typewriter
is very distressing to him; so of course, I do as much of it
as possible. I ride on street cars at free times, sitting
over a wheel or the air pump, for vibration, and that wears
him down. I take a couple of pellets of aspirin when I have
work to do and the interference is bad; that helps me to
think. On the other hand, I am taking Vitamins A, D, B, and
occasionally some K. I have had some help from Christian
Science practitioners; and whenever it is possible to do
so effectively, I pray. I am fairly large build and have
a wonderful constitution. Can you make any suggestions, to
endure until the time comes?"
4/25/44 EC's letter: "...Do let us hear from you from
time to time. Don't take too much sedatives; aspirin is
about the best thing you can take, but not too regularly.
Thanking you..."
5/02/44 Letter: "The time is growing shorter - thank good-
ness; and
6/09/44 doesn't seem so far off. I have come a long
way. Your letter of April 25 arrived yesterday. The better
and better is simply that he gets weaker and weaker, but
since it is his head that does the damage at the present rate
it will take 10 years to wrench myself free; and of course, I
am having an awfully tough time and it has been wearing me
for more than 6 years in this degree. I try to get along
without aspirin as much as possible, now taking it almost
entirely to enable me to do my work, since it seems to relax
the nerves and I imagine, some of that stuff just loosens
from them. Anyway it is a nip and a tuck holding a job; and
I have nearly lost it several times. My work is very light.
I will add this: For many years I have been more or less a
casual student of palmistry, accepting however only the most
gifted and dependable authorities. It started when I was in
despair owing to many years of fighting extreme insomnia. I
know now that it was this same thing - how my life has been
wasted. I wondered if I could find out if there was any use
going on. Palmists as a rule are a miserable lot, and not to
be consulted; so I undertook my own search. It is a
marvelous study. The story at present in my case is this:
Left hand shows that I am putting up a brilliant fight.
Right hand shows protection to heart; shows the problems of
the brain; shows protection in the field of practical
endeavor; the awful attacking lines on mount of ambition and
the promise there; shows two lines arising on the mount of
moral courage, nearly 1/2 inch apart, converging on the
stream of consciousness about 1 inch distant and much, much
more. Friendly lines have risen here and there to beat enemy
lines off. This hand also shows that I shall have a
fascinating future; so I will come out of this perpetual
crucible. How I have suffered! But the future appears to be
deeply compensating. So I eagerly await your good offices,
and I shall have no fear; I am deeply religious, and I trust
the Father."
5/16/44 Letter: "Referring to your letter of January 1, I
note again that the time for the Reading will be ..." The
day before I shall send you a wire, so that you will have a
last minute touch with me. I shall re-read the membership
application that I have for instructions as to behavior.
I shall be in my room in ... sitting quietly thinking as
you desire. I have not decided what I shall select for
meditation, but that will be carefully done. My room is on
... I am holding together so far all right, but it is tough,
as you can surmise. I have 3 practitioners working for me,
but it is hard to see what is accomplished. Of course, in
Science, one is supposed to have only one practitioner. But
I should have a dozen, and since they did not handle the
matter right in the beginning, I have no compunction in
engaging as much prayers as I can get. This has been a busy
day on the typewriter, and the old torturer must be pretty
tired. I hope so. The typewriter is pretty hard on him. So
the more the better. My hand says I have a future. How it
encourages me to keep on, since this future is also to be
very exceptional. But then there has to be some reason for
my coming into being here. My eager hope, my eager hope, to
you and the 9th..."
5/23/44 Letter: "It is not possible doubtless for 2 persons
to live in one body, and the meaning of your statement that
you hoped you would read me in time becomes clear. However,
I am having good Christian Science support, and I expect
to be on hand 6/9. I know also that I must be divinely
supported because I am so calm. At times it seems that I
cannot go on, but at those times especially, I usually come
to feel that I am not alone. I repeat that I shall be in my
room... We are going to have a magnificent season of grand
opera beginning the latter part of September, and I am
looking forward to it as the sunflower turns toward the sun
in the full expectation of for once being able to attend in
peace and comfort, fully competent to take it in, enjoy and
understand it, and looking reasonably fresh and attractive.
How I love great music. To be free, to be free!"
6/07/44 Telegram: "To undo the heavy burdens, and to let the
oppressed go free. Isaiah 58:6."
REPORTS
6/21/44 Letter: "Your report, mailed June 15, been received;
and frankly I feel that I have been imposed upon. I was
beginning to realize that the effort had been wasted, because
had you really been sending me something it would surely
have been joyfully hurried forward. You have had opportunity
to investigate and acquire for your library information of
an unusual and highly important character; and my several
letters to you have courteously given you additional facts.
Your sketchy report - from which evidently much has been
deleted - even contradicts the sense of your own previous
statements, presumably made on some experience with the
subject, i.e., 'I am afraid of what I suspect as to your
condition... I hope that we can get this in time', (your
letter Jan. 7). The matter is primarily in my nervous
system, in the depth and center of my brain as the terminus
of that system and the source of my resistance, etc. It is
not a matter for artificial sun-rays and gentle massage. No
one ever had a more perfect 'assimilating system' than I. I
wrote you and you could confirm it, that I have a wonderful
constitution; and certainly I would have to have, both
mental and physical, in order to live any time at all in this
condition. In view of the extreme difficulty with which I
earn enough to live on, and since I have, as stated, made
a substantial contribution to your interests, I am of the
opinion that the $20. forwarded to you on the inspiration of
such statements as these 'I certainly understand what this
must be to you, and assure you we would give you the first
possible period we could.' (your letter
12/21/43) 'I do
hope that we can get this in time to be of a real service.
I know what this must mean.' (your letter Jan. 7, '44)"
7/08/44 Letter: "The matter is now more awful and terrifying
than ever."
7/14/44 EC's letter: "I have yours of the 21st, and I am
sorry indeed to know that you feel that you have wasted your
time and effort. The information as we have been able to
obtain it speaks for itself, and to you this means nothing.
If you will return all of the data sent you, we will be glad
to return your membership fee... Thanking you..."
8/03/44 Letter: "Your letter dated ... check for $20.
acknowledged with thanks. Looking over the correspondence,
I find that I have not mentioned that the 'thing' comes in
through the feet (mostly, I think), like a sort of sting,
but producing a queer tickling or itching, and later the
part is actually sore while the stinging is going on, may
be hours. This is for your record. Anyone having those
queer ticklish-itching feet, beware! I am certain that the
insomnia was the reaction of my helpless body to something I
was unconscious of; it would not sleep while in such danger;
but after I became aware of the situation several years ago,
it was willing to sleep when possible; anyway a part of the
effort of the intruder is to put the mind to sleep, so that
it was extremely difficult to pray and sometimes even to
keep awake. After I met the man, I had a period (some 2 or
3 years) of incessant colds, terrific colds. How I ever
survived them I cannot say. I know that I nearly drove crazy
everyone around me. But as I resisted and he burrowed, the
form changed, and I finally got rid of the particular colds.
The young lady in the office here with me has suffered from
colds also, not knowing that she is picking up the overflow
from me. In England they execute those men. It is too good
for them. These facts are given to enlarge your record."
