4/39 GD's note: While visiting EC's home, [
1641] told of
his family background: how his father a retired minister,
had adopted [
5227] as a baby following an automobile-train
accident, in which [
5227] and his mother (now in an insane
asylum) were the sole survivors. Killed in the wreck were
[
5227]'s father, an older brother, and his grandmother
([
1641]'s stepmother). The shock was too much for [
5227]'s
mother, and she was committed to the institution in 1934.
6/15/40 GD's note: Death of [
5227]'s grandfather (his
constant companion) took place, and he was adopted by [
1641]
and left in the care of his uncle ([
1641]'s younger brother
[
1330]) while [
1641] was in the Navy. Later, [
1330] also had
to enter the service, but his young wife (newly-wed) took
[
5227] to live with her.
8/12/43 Uncle [
1641]'s letter: "According to a birth
certificate here at ..., Va., my little nephew [
5227] was
born in ..., Mich. on
4/22/33. His father [...] was born in
Ohio. His mother, (my sister) was born in Ind. At the time
when the Life Rdg., is executed, he will likely be in care of
[...] my brother [[
1330]'s wife] in Va. That is his present
address. I am hoping it will be as spoken to him personally,
and helpful with regard to his origins, experiences, talents
and personal purpose in this appearance."
1/11/44 Uncle [
1641]'s letter: "...My nephew made his
school honor roll and had a wonderful holiday..."
REPORTS
7/07/44 Uncle [
1641]'s letter: "...What I call home is the
place where my nephew lives, which is with my brother...
The reading given for my nephew, is here, and I have studied
it. Did someone forget to ask for it to be given in child's
language, addressed directly to him? My sister-in-law who
has him to care for, does not see your work like my brother
and I, though she is a splendid woman..." (A telegram
arrived
7/06/44 stating [
1330] [[
1641]'s younger brother] was
missing in action.)
4/09/46 Uncle [
1641]'s letter: "...My nephew [
5227] is about
13 years old in the 6th grade..."
9/08/46 Uncle [
1641]'s letter: "...The plan at present is to
send my nephew to ... Military Academy, which is near ... at
..., Virginia..." [Uncle later reported that his nephew did
not like military school.]
9/23/49 Questionnaire sent. No reply.
8/01/60 Uncle [
1641] reported that [
5227] was working in a
bank, in Washington, D.C.
