7/27/44 Letter: "I want to express my appreciation for the
helpful and thought-provoking life reading. Because there
are so many ideas expressed in my reading, it has been
necessary for me to read and re-read it. Each time I find
some new meaning and I realize that I have as yet, by no
means, fully comprehended it. The idea of a continuation of
personality through the ages is a new and strange one to me.
At first, I must admit, it rather shocked me. Yet, after
considering it for several weeks, I find that it does seem
plausible and rather comforting, perhaps even challenging.
The belief that God is completely all powerful has made
this thought completely acceptable now, if not completely
understandable. Another very strong feeling which I have had
is that there is and must be according to God's plan for the
world - an ever developing among the peoples of the world,
in order to more nearly approach His kingdom on earth.
This principle is expressed, I feel, in the aims of social
service, and it is satisfying to have a realization of
oneness with others back through the ages who have felt this
too. Your reading has strengthened my belief that I am in
the type of work which I can best perform. The suggestion
that I am best qualified to work with adolescent girls has
raised a question in my mind however. This is more or less
the kind of work I did for 3 years, while I was employed
at the school board. I had become discouraged there, even
considering giving up social work entirely, when I changed
jobs last fall and went into the Red Cross. I am still doing
social work, but it is with the injured soldiers in a large
army hospital. I feel much happier in this work where the
feeling of accomplishment has been greater. Now I am trying
to decide whether I should volunteer to go overseas with the
Red Cross or stay where I am. I suppose there will always be
these difficult decisions to make..."
