5/11/44 Letter: "...My future plans being uncertain and
undecided, I am counting heavily on that reading to advise
and help me... I was 36 years old on the 4th of this month
of May, but I feel and look 26. I am not unattractive, yet,
possibly because I was timid at the time when I should have
been going with boys, I didn't know how to act, and
consequently have had no real courtships. There were several
boys I might have formed real friendships with - as I look
back - but my shyness prevented it. Except for this, my life
has been good with the blessings of devoted family
relationships. But now, at 36, I find myself practically
alone with parents gone, my brother in the Army, and myself
in a medical secretarial job. The men I knew are now married
and gone... I have tried, all my life, to live a truly
Christian life, and hoped that everything would turn out all
right. But now, I have reached the point where I feel my
life has counted for nothing and that I have nothing to look
forward to. You don't know how much I am depending on your
help to aid me out of the darkness and uncertainty which
increasingly surround me."
REPORTS
7/03/44 Letter: "...I have read and re-read it several times,
but find several places that still are beyond my proper
understanding... Your suggestions as to talents interested
me, as I always wanted to go into acting and even tried once
in New York, without success. I have also been writing
stories and having them rejected by the publishers. I
believe I am too old to go into acting now, unless it were
the radio. Would you kindly look at the paragraph beginning
with 'in this activity if the body sets a goal for itself
...'; also the paragraph in which we find the part beginning
with '...but the application of many...' etc. Please do tell
me what interpretations to give here, as I can tell they are
important, yet escape my true comprehension. I should like
to know how to prepare for my future, as mentioned in Q-3
[Par. 21-Q]. I have every intention of following out your
advice and will pray for guidance. Please let me hear from
you soon, as to the length of my reading and elucidation on
the above questions. I realize you are very busy and trust
you will not be annoyed. But this is very important to me,
and I know you know that. Some day, I hope to come and talk
with you in person, if you will not be too busy."
7/08/44 EC's letter: "...I am of the opinion as in
practically every one of this type of reading, it is giving
you the basis for you to search out...lay it aside and then
read it again and again, and then try putting into practice
some of the things which it has suggested to you..."
