5331]'s letter: "I took down in bed with
Arthritis in June 1935, after being bothered with it all
that spring - swollen fingers and knees, aching arms and
shoulders. I had worked since graduating from high school -
but as soon as I quit work June 8, 1935 I went all to pieces,
began having very hard chills, then high fever and then
terrible sweats. The doctor took several blood tests,
thinking I might have malaria, typhoid or some fever that
was causing this but could find nothing. I was very ill all
during that summer, winter and spring. However, I returned
to work - different office, though - in August 1936. I
wasn't very well but my father died the following month and I
kept on working and doctoring until Nov. 1, 1940, when I was
forced to quit again.
"Another doctor advised me to go to Arizona, so Mother and
I did. After being there about a month, I became seriously
ill again. One druggist thought I had a nervous breakdown
because I had been fighting against so much pain for so long.
We lived in Arizona 17 months, then came back to ... During
this time my feet and fingers became terribly deformed and
seem to be getting worse daily. My fingers are set at the
joints in all kinds of shapes. I am not in bed any more but
I have to rest all the time. I sleep late in the morning
and usually lie down for an hour or two later in the day. My
feet have bone growths on the bottom so it is very painful to
walk and my ankles feel like they are sprained.
"I have been to several doctors and taken a lot of
examination but they can find no cause.
"Just during the last 2 months I have had an irritation
under the skin that appears very red and itchy if I happen
to scratch. When I am rubbed, after taking a bath, this
appears in splotches all over the body. It is under the
skin and there are no blisters. Maybe in a few hours it
will completely disappear and the skin will be white and
smooth again. But it will reappear in a few hours...more
noticeable in the afternoon and evenings.
"My appetite is very good but I remain skinny, around 90 lbs.
and I am tall."
