This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 21st day of July, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self, Mr. [5358], new Associate Member of the Ass'n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by a Presbyterian minister and the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

Present: Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis and Jeanette Fitch, Stenos. Born November 26, 1895, in Hiawatha, Kansas.

TEXT

1. GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:
2. EC: Where the song was written - Haiwatha!
3. Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called, [5358]. In giving the interpretations of the records, we find there is much from which to choose.
4. These we would choose with the desire and purpose that this be a helpful experience for the entity, enabling it to fulfill the purposes for which it entered this experience.
5. We find the entity one of those souls very sincere and yet oftentimes very severe and very hardheaded or determined, and the entity is serious in same until at times it is hard for the entity to appreciate the minds of those who are less sure of themselves. These are good or they may be bad, dependent upon the use to which the entity puts same; but the thing the entity is to magnify is tolerance.
6. Study, yes, give expression, yes; but know there are others who are also an expression of good in the earth besides self.
7. Astrologically, we find Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, and Neptune are indicated with Saturn over all. These indicate that while there are times that there must be changes, these should be as an outgrowth and not as a discarding all which has been in the experience for an idea.
8. These, then, in the activities indicate a high mental ability; as in politics, writing, these are the fields of expression for the entity, but in fiction we would choose rather the more serious sides of description of groups, individuals, rather than things. Use urges latent and manifested by the psychology of mob or group psychological as against individuality. But learn tolerance, and these with the abilities of the entity offer the greater channel for the expressions of the entity, as will be seen from the experiences of the entity in the earth.
9. While all are not given, these are indicated as the pattern and along all the lines or channels how and why the entity thinks or feels in those directions, as:
10. Before this we find the entity was in the early days of the laying out or the settling of the land which is now the capital of the entity's present sojourn. Here we find the entity contributing to activities in the plans which were set forth by those in authority.
11. The entity was then in the name of Henry McCallum and made records of the more serious nature pertaining to whys of this or that character of planning for the expansions which might come.
12. Thus interest in description of things and conditions and urges is a part of the experience of the entity, thus giving the entity latent and manifest abilities in the field of writing.
13. Before that we find the entity was in the periods when there were those setting forths of definite descriptions which were to be made of reports to the Roman rulers, and the entity was then in the capacity of one who would be called the reporter to those in authority.
14. Thus the abilities to notice details, to notice that which is the cause or purpose behind reports of individuals, are parts of the entity's experience.
15. The name then was Romano. In the activities of that period we find the political trend, and thus the entity can formulate plans and signs for the activity upon groups by propaganda, or psychoanalysis.
16. Before that we find the entity was in the Holy Land when there were those returnings to the worship of the only God. With the rebuilding of the temple and those activities under Zerubbabel the entity first came to the land. The divisions or disputations which arose among the second and third groups who returned brought disturbance and disorder into the experience of the entity, yet the ability to plan, the ability to become very staid or set or hardheaded, all arise from the experiences of the entity then as Perthuel.
17. As to the abilities of the entity, then, that to which it may attain and how, much depends upon the ideals which are chosen, not ideas but ideals.
18. For the entity finds, if it would analyze self and its abilities to contribute to world conditions, local conditions, social conditions or what have you, that there is a body, mind, soul; there is an ideal body; there is an ideal position mentally; there is an ideal spiritually. All that comes into mental or material manifestation must first have its inception in spirit. Analyze self in that direction. Know thy ideals, - not merely by assuming and holding in mind - write them down. Then let the life be guided, directed in the spirit of truth to make self as one to contribute to the welfare of others.

BACKGROUND

1. 8/15/43 Letter: "A Life Reading might help me to find myself. I have other problems also, but at present a pending vocational change overshadows these others...as consequence of reading THERE IS A RIVER, and having noted therein the good you have been able to accomplish for others with respect to the discovery of their best aptitudes, as well as by the diagnoses of their physical ailments, I have determined I must ask you whether you can and will help me, in this former sense."
2. 7/07/44 Indicated he had read the Bible through completely for the first time in his life, as a result of having read THERE IS A RIVER - wishes he had started it sooner.
3. 7/18/44 "Upon reflection I have decided to allow my reading to be given entirely without interference from me. Perhaps in this spirit there may be elicited what I yearn to know respecting my particular vocational aptitude and potentiality, but seems too profane in trying to ask."
