6/20/46 Personal report as told to Gina Cerminara, Ph.D:
Page 1 "one who may never be called lazy" - very true; not
lazy
"stubborn, hardheaded, hard to get along with - plenty of
truth in that
"to get by for the moment" - in some respects, this seems
to be true; as for example might not bother to dress for
dinner; should do more reading than he does, but gets by
without it - there may be a lazy streak here somewhere,
he says
"Jupiter makes for interest" - yes, has always had this
interest
Page 2 "should be a supervisor" - was supervisor for 6 years
in a canvas specialty house; enjoyed work very much,
though there was interference."
Page 3 "the entity wished for power...etc." Says that when
he was supervisor he used this parallel: referring to 10
commandments, "I am a jealous God. Thou shalt have no
other gods before me." He would say to the men under
him, I am a jealous boss; I don't want any interference.
Did this to establish his authority.
"making these is still of interest" - yes, a child was
always interested in paper; made paper from pulp for
kites; has done some crocheting; was interested in one
time in making relief maps from paper pulp. Once started
out to make string; developed a string that was very
strong. Has been interested in developing cotton
substitute for linen. Spoke of use of sugar in making
fibers stiff, in cleaning ribbons, etc.
"disliked being under the rule of others" - still
dislikes being under somebody else's rule.
"desires latent in self to be superlative in its work" -
says he has been called 'too damn fussy' many times; if
he makes something he wants it just right; nothing annoys
him more than somebody who does something in a slipshod
way and says its all right.
"People are not different from yourself." - Says when he
was about 15 he used to wonder if other people could
possibly think and be conscious just as he was; if a
stone hit them for example, how could he be sure that it
hurt them as much as it hurt him?
Page 4 "You are not consistent even in this" - Doesn't know
just how this would apply. Might start to study
something and then change his mind because there was no
value in it; otherwise doesn't feel himself to be
particularly inconsistent.
In what way was the reading valuable?
Tried to be more tolerant of people because of statement
"other people have ideas also."
Kept him from making a radical change in his work.
Gave him deeper faith in the existence and reality of
God.
