9/09/44 Nothing was known of the history of this case until
two weeks after the reading, his wife wrote: "Five years
ago...a fatty non-malignant tumor was removed from where it
had been pressing on the left side of the spine at the base
of the skull. The incision healed satisfactorily and for a
time the pain he had had was gone. However, gradually the
pain seemed to grow worse and in May he went to Ann Arbor,
Mich. hospital for an exploratory operation. Nerves were
clipped to kill the pain. Several of the vertebrae were
pulled apart in an attempt to discover any more tumorous
growths. The doctors found nothing. Since then more nerves
have been clipped, but the pain still persists. After the
operation at Ann Arbor he wore a neck brace for a time - even
yet it is an effort to hold his head up. He cannot raise his
left arm above his head, there is a tightness and swelling in
the back of head and neck. Even the front and sides of his
neck are sometimes tense and the cords feel hard.
"One doctor in ..., Mich. has a more complete and technical
report of his case. We probably could obtain a copy for you,
if you wish.
"On our trip here from Mich., as soon as entering the
Missouri mts., the pain and tension seemed to disappear.
About 2 weeks after arriving in Ariz., my husband started
doing ranch work. After driving a tractor for a time the
soreness began coming back, so he quit that and is now doing
janitor work here. Now his neck hurts as bad as ever, but
the sharp shooting pains in his head have let up. His left
arm doesn't pain so much, but the right arm now pains, feels
weak, etc...
"According to your reading, would you say that Arizona
provides the proper atmospheric pressure?"
GD's note: Thoreau also said: "Be not simply good; be
good for something."
"Know your own bone; gnaw at it, bury it, unearth it,
and gnaw it still... Be not simply good; be good for
something. When you travel to the celestial city, carry
no letter of introduction. When you knock, ask to see
God - none of the servants. -THOREAU:Walden.
4/07/60 Wife's letter: "Would it be possible to get a copy
of the reading? Mr. [
5396] is now in a Phoenix hospital
recovering from the effects of a spinal tap and air x-rays
to find a nerve block. No block was found and therapy has
been advised. I thought your report might give us some clue
for treatment."
