1/29/32 Daughter [
349]'s letter: "...I'm here with my
worries again, but in this case they are 'our' worries - that
of my family and myself. It's about my father's eyes again.
They are getting worse all the time, and I believe the
trouble is a cataract in the right eye which puts all the
strain on the left eye, and in consequence is making that
one worse.
"All the doctors he has ever gone to have said he must have
an operation, and they are not sure of the outcome. That is
the one thing he dreads, and he said that with an operation
he will be 'lost'. The doctor at Mt. Sinai Hospital on
Wednesday told him the same thing, and he feels dreadfully
about it, and my mother as well.
"Really, it's an awful situation and I have been frantic
since then. My father says that as things are now he has
whatever vision he has, but with the operation he will be
'lost' and he won't have it; he feels he shouldn't...
"An appointment has been made with the eye doctor for Monday
morning, and as terribly earnest I am in wanting my reading
Tuesday morning, as you have been able to arrange, I will let
it go and take my chances on another time, if you can give my
father my appointment Tuesday morning. However, if you could
get in a check-up on me in a few days, as the questions I
want to ask for him won't be many, please let me know and I
will advise you where he will be..."

2/08/32 Daughter [
349]'s letter: "...The readings came in and
we do indeed thank you very sincerely, from the bottom of our
hearts. As far as my father [
5451] is concerned, it makes
us feel better about the operation which will no doubt take
place in about two months..."
2/16/32 EC's letter: "...I am very glad that the information
even for the moment gave you some hope about your father's
condition. When the operation does become necessary, I hope
the operator may be guided by Him who doeth all things well,
and that he may come from it with the very best possible
results. Often times we come to the realization that we
must leave all in His hands. He knows best..."
5/24/37 Daughter [

been in bed flat on his back for over six weeks. He has a
'thrombosis'..."
3/23/39 Daughter [
349]'s letter: "...My Dad had an operation
on his right eye last Thursday and he seems to be progressing
as well as he should. We expect that he may be home within
another week, although he will have to take it very easy in
order that he may have his left eye operated on within about
six months..."
11/06/39 Daughter [
349]'s letter: "...My father is in
the hospital, having had his second eye operated on for
a cataract..."
4/16/40 Daughter's letter: "...My father's left eye,
operated on recently, is no good now, and the doctor has
ordered him to bed for a few days, then back to the hospital
for another three weeks stay and another operation..."
4/30/40 Daughter's letter: "...My father is still in bed,
but tomorrow I take him to the doctor again and we are afraid
that he is in for another operation on his left eye. The
operation previously didn't turn out as we had expected..."
9/13/40 Daughter's letter: "...My father's eye hasn't fully
responded to the operation..."
