6/22/27 Dr. Mary E. Layne's letter: "...We are wondering
where and how you all are, as we haven't heard from you in a
long time. We are getting on nicely. Dr. Layne [Al. C.] is
keeping up wonderfully well. I am sending this on to your
home address where we last heard from you, hoping you can
soon have it.
"Mrs. [
4280] has a fine little son [
5520], four months old
last Saturday. He has been gaining and growing nicely up
until two weeks ago. He began vomiting and has lost two
pounds or more. He has a little cold. We want you to see
and tell us if he has WHOOPING COUGH?
"[
4281], his sister, has a cough too, and she has been
playing with some little friends who took the whooping cough
three weeks ago. Please see if it is his food, or teeth, or
the whooping cough that is making him vomit and lose weight
so fast.
"Please see if he needs raw cow's milk or goat's milk? Which
will be better? His mother [
4280] hasn't any milk for him
and so far he has been taking the boiled cow's milk with
Mellin's Food.
"Please see which kind of sugar he needs, and how much daily?
Which is best for him, Mellin's Food, Dextri-Maltose or the
beet sugar or cane sugar? or malt-soup extract?... Can he
take orange juice now with Mellin's Food, or any other sugar?
We have tried to give him orange juice several times but each
time it seems to make so much gas in his stomach... See if
he needs Infant or B. B. Culture? Tomato and carrot juice
now; or how soon can he have them?
"Please go over the baby's case and answer the questions as
quickly as you can..."
GD's note:
6/29/27 mother [
4280]'s wire urged early reading.
On
7/01/27 Dr. Al. C. Layne wired that the baby [
5520] was
critically ill and needed emergency reading.
7/11/27 Dr. Mary E. Layne's letter: "...Your wire just
received and so glad to get in touch with you again. We
tried to reach you while you were in Hopkinsville, but
failed. Dr. [Al. C. Layne] and I and Mrs. [
4280] are all so
anxious for you to give a reading for the little baby [
5520].
He is four and one-half months old now and such a precious
baby. He has been ill for three weeks, vomiting so much of
his milk and coughing some. We want you to see if he has
whooping cough or is the cough coming from his stomach?...
[She then repeated some of the same questions regarding his
feeding that she had previously submitted]... He can't sleep
very long at a time. Is this caused from hunger? He has
been on very weak formulas for three weeks trying to overcome
the vomiting. Please see just how many tablespoons of sugar
he needs in 24 hours. Is there anything to do to make his
teeth come through without causing him so much trouble? Can
he take orange juice without causing gas? and how much now?
How soon can he have tomato and carrot juice? See if there
is anything abnormal about his whole body, if so tell how to
correct. Would sun baths of three minutes exposure benefit
him?
"Now we want you to please let us have his reading as soon as
possible, as we need this information in feeding him. He is
very weak at present..."
REPORTS
10/03/27 Mother [
4280]'s letter thanked EC for little
daughter [
4281]'s reading and requested a check-up for
baby [
5520]:
"...He is cutting three teeth and has three teeth through
entirely. He has been on boiled goat's milk, boiled three
minutes, for past six weeks. I have tried to have him take
the raw milk but it gives him indigestion and gas. The
tomatoes and orange juice also caused gas up to two weeks
ago - haven't tried them since. We are afraid he isn't
getting any vitamins and might have rickets.
"Is there any vitamin left in the milk after boiling three
minutes? How long before he can take raw milk again? Can
he take orange juice and how diluted? How long should the
tomatoes be cooked before giving him the juice? How long
before he can take carrot juice? Should he have any cooked
vegetable juices? How soon? Should he have Zwieback? Is
the unsweetened Zwieback, put up by the Battle Creek Company,
best for him? Can he take B. B. or Infant Culture? What
should I do when his bowels become upset with diarrhea, as
they are now? Is soda good? Some think it good and others
say it is harmful. His kidneys seem to bother him some. He
cries out when they act. Is Citrate of Soda (a fruit salts)
good for him at such times? Should he be 'circumcised' at
all? If so, at what age? One doctor here thinks he should
and Dr. Layne says not. Please tell me what to do! Is there
anything he can chew to make his teeth hurry through? They
keep him upset in stomach and bowels, so Dr. Layne thinks.
He has a place on his scalp that looks badly and he keeps
scratching it. It came from a mosquito bite. Is there
anything to heal it? It looks like eczema now.
"Please let us hear from you as soon as you can and please
accept this small offering until we can do better..."
10/17/27 EC gave the second reading -
5520-2.
