5/16/59 Excerpt from Walter McGraw's NBC "Monitor" Radio
Program, THE CAYCE STORY - interviewing W. Russell
Hatchett, City Manager of Virginia Beach, Va.
Announcer: Here is Walter McGraw in another chapter on
the marvelous man who seemed to have knowledge possessed by
no other human being, the mystic of Virginia Beach - Edgar
Cayce.
Walter McGraw: Edgar Cayce didn't go to Virginia Beach until
the latter part of his life. He went there because one of
his readings read that's where he should settle. When he
decided to move there, he knew nothing about the town, had
never seen it and he and his family were most disappointed
to see the sleepy little fishing village near Norfolk. But,
since other people followed his readings, Cayce thought
he should too, and there he settled. There too, he began
to make friends, and one of these friends was W. Russell
Hatchett, who is now City Manager of Virginia Beach. To
him, and many others, Cayce made predictions about the
growth of Virginia Beach - among them the fact that the city
would grow northward, although all indications were at that
time that the city would develop to the south. We talked
to City Manager Hatchett and asked him if Edgar Cayce's
predictions had come true and we were told:
W. Russell Hatchett: Well, Sir, they certainly have, and I
am amazed when you hear of Doctor Cayce's vision with regards
to values in this area - that he should have been so able to
hit the thing on the head just as he did. Property in the
area at the north end of Virginia Beach has advanced in price
I suppose 10 times what it's value was at the time when Mr.
Cayce made this prediction.
Walter McGraw: Well, couldn't this just be a matter of
having a good eye for real estate? In other words, looking
at the difference between the north and south side of
Virginia Beach and saying, "Well, this is going to be
the better property?"
W. Russell Hatchett: Well, it was in fact building to the
south. The south area was more fully developed at the time
- the north end had not begun to develop too much.
Walter McGraw: Can you compare the property values between
the north and the south end of Virginia Beach now?
W. Russell Hatchett: Well, of course, for residential areas,
the values there are probably four or five times greater than
the residential values of property to the south.
Walter McGraw: In 1932, Edgar Cayce predicted that within
thirty years or by (1962) Norfolk with it's environs would
be the chief port on the east coast, and he said specifically
"This not excepting Philadelphia or New York." In 1932,
how would you say these three ports compared New York,
Philadelphia, and Norfolk?
W. Russell Hatchett: Well, I would say that Norfolk (not
Norfolk, but the Hampton Roads area, was a low tonnage area
in comparison to those three ports. In 1931, as an example,
the harbor of Hampton Roads handled a million and a half
tons, and for the year 1956 - New York Harbor handled 39
million tons, Philadelphia 29 million tons, Hampton Roads
49 million tons.
Walter McGraw: In other words, Hampton Roads Harbor is now
the number one harbor on the east coast of the United States,
which is something I didn't know?
W. Russell Hatchett: Tonnage-wise it is.
Walter McGraw: And Edgar Cayce's prediction did come true?
Was there any indication in 1931 or 1932, which you can
remember, that this would happen?
W. Russell Hatchett: No, I think Doctor Cayce was probably
the only person in this area who had any such idea that our
Harbor would ever enjoy such business as it now enjoys.
Walter McGraw: I rather wish I had known about his
predictions on property values long ago, you could be
quite a rich man now.
W. Russell Hatchett: Well, a person could have bought blind
and been a millionaire if they had followed Doctor Cayce's
advices.
Walter McGraw: Yes, many people say their lives were
made much more prosperous and healthy as a result of the
predictions made by Edgar Cayce, but he, himself, was
never a rich man.
